Can "torch colors" be removed or minimized without additional damage to the gun?

It would seem the damage is already done, spot annealing a gun action isn't A great way to color an action

Torch coloring steel is in no way, shape, or form, an annealing process.

There is probably no metallurgical term that is misused and misunderstood as much as annealing.

Keith is absolutely correct, its not annealing its tempering.

My issues with torch colors are: 1. they look like crap, and 2. the part has been tempered at different temperatures and thus different hardness.

Probably not a good way to treat steel.

Respectfully

Mike

100% correcto-Keithan-- anyone who tries to "restore" case colors with the "Blue Tip Wrench" should be castrated--and hung out of Macy's store front window at High Noon. RWTF

Just as a comment, Id think if it can be assumed that heat created the colors, then it wasnt hot enough for an anneal process to take place. That doesnt mean the steel wasnt previously annealed, only that the torch affected a surface that started off relative free of oxides?
