Im picking up a sukalle rifle today and wondering how much info is out there on him. I have no idea who made the stock but the barrel is marked w.a. Sukalle gunmaker. Ill try to post some pictures tomorrow if there is interest. I think this is a late 40s custom. The stock looks good but nothing fancy. Comes with a G&h side mount and redfield peep.

Add Sukalle into search window at the left, about 9 pages of comments on him. I believe Michael Petrov also wrote of him in his books.

Interesting reading. Most of what I know comes from reading OConnor books. Thx

The prominent stock maker who worked with Sukalle was Monty Kennedy. You should be able to tell if he stocked your rifle by studying some photos on the internet. Some times his style is a bit 50 ish, but that was when he worked.. At his best, there's no equal from the period.

The only problem I see with that rifle is with the Griffin & Howe mount, which was attached much too high in order to clear the unaltered bolt handle. The easy solution to that is to send the rifle back to G&H for a bolt handle job and a lowering of the scope mount. This is what I am referring to:

Adolph Minar also used Sukalle barrels. See Petrov's first volume

I don't think we modernize thirties or forties vintage custom rifles by known makers.

I don't think we modernize thirties or forties vintage custom rifles by known makers. I have no plans to alter anything. I mounted a Leupold scope using the siting G&H Mount and started shooting. Its probably my best shooting rifle I own and I hope to use it on whitetail deer this fall. No clue who the stock maker would be but not Minar, barrel dates to 1947.

The close-up stock photo looks like G&H work. The checkering pattern and the relief around the action opening as well as the shape of the bolt handle all look like 50's G&H to me. The plain black walnut though makes me wonder.

I have never seen a G&H stock with a Schnabel fore end tip. Also, I have never seen a G&H stock with the thumb rest behind the bolt handle, which, incidentally, does not appear to have been altered. That's the reason for the abnormally high scope mount, since the scope had to clear both the bolt handle and the unaltered military safety.
