What kind of Custom FN Mauser did I buy - please help identify

Hello all.

I just bought a strange Custom FN Mauser. Strange features include a torpedo shaped bolt shroud and a trigger lock style safety behind the trigger.

Anyone ever see anything like this? Caliber is 416 Taylor.

Receiver says "FN" and the serial number starts with a "C"

I really don't know, but my first impression was "Winslow?", I wouldn't bet a cup of coffee on it though. Maybe others will come in with ideas.

Hello Mike,
Thanks for the reply.

Yes, somewhat. Only the butt pad says "Winslow" to me. I used to collect them. But I've never seen a "long" torpedo shaped bolt shroud like this (similar to the Mauser mod 3000) and a behind the trigger safety.

buckstix,
I'm pretty sure the bolt shroud is "after market" and maybe Mauser 2000/3000, I seem to remember Gunparts Corp. having a lot of the parts left over from that model rifle. They were actually made by Heym before the Widow Heym was able to regain control of the firm. The safety would also be aftermarket, by whoever put the rifle together. I don't believe either part had anything to do with FN. As always, I could be wrong.

Hello Der Ami,
Thanks for the reply.

A fellow forum member found the answer. Its a custom Harry Lawson rifle from the 70's. I found the original auction listing for my rifle when it sold back in 2009.

Buckstix,
Thanks for the info, I'm not very good at guessing these things, but it is fun. Now that you solved it, I can see Harry Lawson in the rifle( I just liked a different style).

Hello Der Ami,

I took a real flyer on this one, because I really like the style, having collected Winslow rifles in the past. But I wanted it mostly because of the wood. That's really awesome!

I like the appearance of this rifle, except for recoil pad. Probably helps lessen recoil, however. I would keep original pad with the rifle, but substitute something like Silvers pad.

Sorry but I can't help it. Yes the wood is awesome and that makes sense since it was the work of God. Then someone totally disrespected it and made it into a gaudy piece of firewood.

I see it says never fired, my lord who would have ever embarrassed themselves by showing it out on the rifle range. If ever used for hunting the game animals would laugh themselves to death.

And to those who say the workmanship is great then he should have done the work on a 2x4, still a disrespect to the lord but not quite so much.
