I have a Schilling 16 GA SXS horn underlever shotgun that I am trying to identify/evaluate. It has a horn underlever and horn trigger guard extension. Ornate engraving on both sides plus gold filigree on the barrels just forward of the breech. The only markings on the shotgun are HF Schilling Coburg on the rib between the barrels and on the receiver is the serial number 9XXX. Other than that, no proof marks or anything. Can provide detailed pics if I can figure out how to post them. Obviously I am a newbie to this board. Any help or references are greatly appreciated.

1st, an image is worth a 1000 words.

On a glance, I find several Schillings in Koburg basically @ the same address: Herrngaße 13

Carl Schilling

Christian Schilling

Fritz Schilling

Karl Schilling - Nachfolger: Willi Schilling

R. Schilling

Willy Schilling - Herrngaße 13 - Vorgänger: Karl Schilling

I don't see a HF right off, but he could have been their father or grandfather. Since the longarm is devoid of Federal proofmarks, it was manufactured prior to 1891/1893.

Raimey,
I often saw Fritz Schilling in Walter Grass' shop in the 1970s, he looked to be about the same age as Walter who was one of the younger WW2 Vets, so maybe born 1922-24. Maybe this will help in gauging HF's age/time period. Coburger Strasse was one of the main roads out of Muennerstadt, so it would have been more or less a straight shot( even if a fair distance) between them.

Can't ascertain for certain if that is an H in front of the F. Will try to magnify as much as possible. Also see if my camera is capable of a better resolution. I just magnified it and it definitely appears to be HF. Any tips on how to post photos?

There's a thread of a sticky around here somewhere on posting images. I can't post @ the moment but you could email them to me.

Use chalk or soap to bring the characters forward. Also, you might make a rubbing with a soft lead pencil.
