A bit off topic but you might enjoy the Karl Bodmer collection of Plains Indian art from the 1830s at the Joslyn Art Museum. If I were in Omaha I sure would not miss the chance!

Bodmer went up the Missouri River with Prince Maximilian 1833-34 and produced wonderful art work of the Mandans, Minnitarees and other tribes.

Sam is correct. A wonderful Museum. I think the Union Pacific has a museum there, too. Lots of History from Council Bluffs/Omaha to the West.

If you like that, you will love the Desoto Bend, NMR visitor center with its display of a riverboat that sank on it's way to the Montana goldfields and was perfectly preserved in the mud. It is quite amazing.

Be sure to go over to Omaha's own Flat Iron building and have lunch at the restaurant there.

One very much underexploited upland resource in that part of the world: What is probably the western-most woodcock migration route follows the Missouri River. You can hunt them on either side. I've shot woodcock on the Iowa side in plain sight of Nebraska across the river. You'll have to check seasons, and of course there's the issue of catching the flight birds. But you should have chances at them until about mid-November or so.

I love to hunt pheasants right up through 4:30 pm on 10 January, and these are the types of places I prefer to hunt, though closer to the center of the state.

There are similar on line resources for Nebraska, but you may have to google them yourself. I seem to have lost them. Whether they are worthwhile and close enough depends on you as much as anything. A friend in the Lincoln area does a lot of 1/2 day upland bird hunting and he is pretty serious about it as well as successful. He doesn't always travel very far. Of course, the grass always looks greener the further away it is. That said, there is good hunting if you want to hunt for it.
