First time poster here and love this forum. Soooo, the LGS has a Batavia Leader 12GA for sale for $400 out the door. 30inch barrels M&F. SN: 59XXF so its a Folsom Gun. Gunsmith/shop owner sold it to an employees brother who used it for some sort of cowboy shooting. Got bored with the whole thing and sold it back to the shop. Im no expert on case coloring but Id say it has way more than 50%, barrels are steel and blued, and the screws arent even buggered up. Bores are bright and shiny. Stock looks great for the age, zero cracks or chips and smooth with a little character. All numbers match and it locks up tight as can be. So, talk me out of it.

the batavia leader is a low end gun that will not hold up to a lot of shooting... for $400, you should be able to buy a decent ithaca lefever nitro special or perhaps a savage fox model b...

Are the chokes still original or have they been bored out? CAS competitors often chop barrels or bore out chokes for close-range shooting.

What do you plan to do with it?
It isnt exactly a woodcock/grouse gun.

Are the chokes still original or have they been bored out? CAS competitors often chop barrels or bore out chokes for close-range shooting. The chokes havent been messed with and the barrels havent been chopped.

Ted Shoot some clay birds, maybe murder some doves in September. Father and I enjoy shotguns and doubles in general. Its an ever growing collection of toys.

I have a Model B from early 50's if i remember correctly, in 20GA that I restored the wood on(not exactly like the high gloss Browning finish on my Sweet 16 but, pretty damn good looking). It's an okay gun. Checkering looks like my 4 year old did it, fit and finish like my 10 year old did it. But i shoot it regardless.

The Leader is not a sought after gun, and not a design to begin your dream of pursuing a shooting title with, more of an occasional good time in the field.
Inspite of what you might see on the net, the gun dealer has it priced fairly, and even at that price, it might take you a while to sell it yourself.
Watch for cracks in the stocks. Id feed it RSTs, not the promo loads from Wal Mart.

Ed is of course full of it. In 1926, when the A.H. Fox Gun Co.'s Sterlingworth was $36.50, and the New Ithaca Double Field Grade was $37.50, a Baker Batavia Leader was $35. Ithaca's Lefever Nitro Special was a price point lower at $27.40, while Folsom's Crescent Fire Arms Co. No. 6 Peerless was $24.50.
Those Folsom era Batavia Leaders really had some great case colors that seemed to wear better than many other guns case colors.

Ted That was the plan, occasional use with some light rounds so as not to beat up the stock. I have plenty of modern shotguns for high volume shooting.
