Would the Fulton in 16ga have 2&9/16" chambers? Thank-you, Kurt

Kurt, I have a 1939 16 ga. Field Grade L.C. Smith that still has 2 9/16" chambers. I believe that Hunter Arms Co. dropped the Fulton line in 1945 along about the time it was being sold to the L.C. Smith Gun Co. a subsidiary of Marlin.
Some say it was the late 30's or early 40's that they changed the chambers over to 2 3/4". Go to this website and see when your gun was made. http://www.lcsmith.org/organization/membership.html
Go down the first column to "Shotguns",opens, go to "Year of Manufacture".

Here's an easy way to check your chamber:
Take a 3" x 5" index card, roll it lengthwise, slide it into the chamber (it will partially unroll and expand to the chamber diameter), gently slide it until it stops at the end of the chamber, use a pencil to mark the index card at the breech end of the barrel, and repeat the steps to see if it always comes to same spot. Then use a tape or ruler to measure length marked on the card. The chamber must be clean, and it works best with a new 3” X 5” card.

And you might enjoy the 'Hunter Arms Fulton Guns' album on the Photo Trail link on the LCSCA Home Page.

Novel idea. And here I purchased a pocket chamber gauge but had one all along on my desk. Any further instruction for measuring choke or constriction using a note card?

Kind Regards,

Sorry Raimey-you gotta spring for one of those fancy micrometer things that Brownells sells
I've marked the shaft on mine with 2", 2 1/2", 2 9/16", 2 3/4", 3", 3 1/2", 4" -makes it easy to measure chamber length, length of forcing cone, length of choke constriction, etc.

I doubt you'll find many 16 bore Fultons with 2 3/4" factory bored chambers. The L C Smith specifications in both 1936 and 1938 call for 2 9/16".. MDC

Agree with M D. Don't think I've ever found a Fulton 16 with 2 3/4" chambers, and I've owned one made as late as 39 or 40, if I recall correctly.

Thanks for your replies! I do not have the gun, but I am thinking of bidding on it and the seller, in his replies to my questions, did not answer the chamber length one. I thought it unlikey it would have 2&3/4, but asked because the help here is very reliable. Thanks again to all.
