Made a quick trip from SoCal to Yuma for the Opener.
Friday evening we traveled about 20 miles east to a feedlot for some quick Eurasian action.
Saturday about 40 miles east to an almost lunar landscape adjacent to cauliflower fields.

High fliers, low fliers and everything in between.
Did I mention fast?

Back in town we passed a grain storage yard.

The grain yard was adjacent to the local high school.
For our viewing pleasure only.

No season or limits on the ECD's.
I shot a 20 gauge 28" BSS Sporter. LMod/IC
Just too hot for a 28 gauge New Britain Fox

We just got back from Yuma and points east. Hot and crowded and the landscape has changed, largely because of the e coli romaine lettuce problem of a few months ago. Lots of bare ground where there used to be crops, even more bare ground around the fields and lots of fenced ground. Fences because a lot of farms seem to be going organic, and there are a lot more deer decimating the crops than ever before. One farmer with six-foot fences around thousands of acres told us that he has seen as many as 80 deer (not a typo) at one time in his fields. The bare ground around the fields is due to some new regulation that I don't have all the details on, but it seems that if you raise food crops within three miles of a dairy or a feedlot, you now have to clear the ground around your fields to prevent e coli issues. Sand dunes have been brush hogged, trees cut down, large stands of salt cedar and tamarisk burned off. Cash's comment about the lunar landscape is right on point. Birds are more concentrated than usual, flight patterns nothing like previous years, even the game wardens said it was an odd opener. And really HOT. Sunday afternoon was 117 where we hunted, because we couldn't find enough birds in the morning, although there were lots of whitewings.
