Summer surveys from the state game agencies ought to be coming out pretty soon. Usually pretty accurate on pheasants if they get the right kind of conditions (early morning, sunny, calm, heavy dew). Will be interesting to see how the Dakotas look after last year's drought disaster.

Being just 65 days and a wake up from my annual SD hunt I am anxiously awaiting the forecast myself!! Feedback I am getting on NE South Dakota (Aberdeen) is better than last year. This is based on local farmers who are reporting bigger brood size and more sightings. In the end only the hunting tells.

On a recent exotic and hog hunt on the YO Schreiner Ranch, my guide and I saw two large Bobwhite coveys and the rancher was pleased, stating that the population is recovering. The range was healthy and all species of critter seemed plentiful.

If youre talking about true West Texas as it regionally describedthe Midland/Odessa area on down south into the Big Bend then I suspect itll be ok but not great, especially for blues. South Texas should also be ok. But the Texas Panhandle, South Plains, and Central Texas areas are looking to be well below normal. Pairs are still being seen but there are also reports of unsuccessful adults already covying up. If thats the case we need to be very careful not to over hunt last years survivors.
