Anyone know who owns this Sauer? Ran across it in my photo album. Is a 13/1 & 16 bore possible? or is it just an overstamp?

Cheers,

I've seen a few that are competitive with what Lindner was producing for Daly. So, while judging every gun on it's own merits, I have a high regard for pre WWI Sauers.

13/1 would be from .719" to .729". Did the Germans make any "Chamberless" guns as the Brits did. 13/1 would of course be normally found on a 12 gauge.
I would highly suspect that stamp just got some kind of a Mis-Hit.

pre ww1 sauers with krupp fluid steel barrels are wonderful guns...all are stamped, "made in prussia", which is kinda neat...12 gauge guns that have passed through my hands have weighed from 6 to 7 1/2 pounds...the heavier guns have long, beefy actions and heavy weight barrels, obviously made for long range water fowling...the lighter weight guns have short actions and light barrels, obviously made for close in upland bird shooting...currently have in hand sauer #99xxx, made for charles daly...28" barrels, weights just 6 1/2 pounds...also, have in hand # 163xxx, 26" barrels, weighs just 6 pounds!

like most pre ww1 guns made anywhere, pre ww1 sauer workmanship is a step above post ww1 guns...so much that was of value died in that madness...

Raimey,

To my eyes that sure looks like a 12 struck over a 16 or vice versa.

I have several older Sauer doubles. One of my favorites is serial number 56xxx, which looks like it was made in 1895 according to Raimey's date chart. A sidelock 16 gauge with very small "clock hands" type cocking indicators, excellent overall condition with an old refinish still in great shape, bores like mirrors. I still shoot it from time to time with low pressure PolyWad loads. I love my Sauers. The better ones are the equal of the majority of much higher prices doubles of the period, IMO.
