Mike B,

If it's made by Webley you'll find the Webley # on either the short rib (early guns) or on the left side of the forend lug tight up against the barrels. You have to look hard to see it.

I really like the Webley built guns regardless of whose name is on them.

I'm not at home to see my book but from memory your gun was made in the late 20's. You can call Evans and they'll tell you when it was built.

MBinMB:
The previous posters have nailed your Screw-Grip Webley & Scott (I think).
Also, the large round "circle" part of the action lever frequently?/always? has the word "PATENT" printed in capital letters in a curved manner.
Best article dedicated to the W&S Screw-Grip guns is "The Ubiquitous SCREW-GRIP" by Ron Forsyth in Shooting Sportsman magazine Sep/Oct 2002 page 82.
Not related to the skeet shooter (that I know of, anyway)....I expect my Scottish ancestors were garden-variety reivers down by the English border. (LOL LOL)

"Patent" frequently appears, but not always in my experience. The threads on the spindle, as seen through the gap in the standing breech, constitute definite proof.

Hi Mike, from "London Gunmakers" by Nigel Brown, your Evans was made in 1925. A high proportion of Evans guns were high end boxlocks that usually have intercepting sears. Terry

Mike, your gun will date to around 1925.

A friend has one of the Scott screw-grip sidelock guns with Rigby's name on it. I looked at one for sale at Steve Barnett's, and Cabela's has some on their web site too. They are nice guns.

Well, there sure is a lot of accumulated knowledge here! Thank you one and all! I learned a lot.

Rocketman how would you view this gun on your fascinating scale as a)a William Evans and as b)an Army and Navy and c)as a Rigby, same Scott made gun after all?

William Evans' sidelock ejector guns would be welcomed most anywhere game is shot.
Their Ble guns are on par with what they're on par with.

Lowell,
heres a BLE for you that is fit for a Raj and would be welcome lots of places. Built in 1927 and one of 17 guns comissioned for the
Maharao of Kotah. Its a 2&3/4" super magnum paradox, 750gr bullet at 1500fps. The top strap is extended over the comb and it is truely a best quality boxlock. As with most things British, you must evaluate each piece for its own merits. This particular gun is thought to be unfired. I kind of like it myself and dont mind wiping the dust off the old girl once in a while.

Well, looks like a Webley made gun, the number 998xx is stamped on the LH side of the barrel lug, thanks JBG.
An old school chum in England has a pair of 12 bore "William Evans from Purdeys" best quality SLEs, inherited from his grandfather. Wonder who made those?. I'll look for the screw grip when I go over next time. I learned a lot today. Thank you all,
Mike
