Lovely interjection there Marc. I had deduced such but I was searching in the language of French. So, would this suggest it was sold to a German speaking client?

Raimey and Marc,

Bravo! You jogged my memory and I now remember a name and location on the rib (I'm sure it was the retailer/seller). I forget the retailer's name, but the location was Tilburg, which I would assume to be Tilburg, Netherlands. So in this case, it would be Dutch. It also brings to the light the fact that both "Choke" and "Verb. Cyl" are in quotes. I wonder if this was due to the fact that they were specifically engraved for the destination country's language.

Raimey, sorry for the poorly lit picture, but the dark side of the flat bares the same marks as the right.

In the fourth picture down on the right chamber area...what is that mark above the elg oval ...from here it first
looked like an upper case F next to an upper case upside down A---those being under some class of lion?

That would be PV under the Rampant Lion, which is Belgium's Smokeless Powder Proof. Look clselyat the pictur & you will see the light reflection just does't how the clsed end of the P real plain, but it is there.

well, it seem that no one wants to say that you have a real bargain so I will. If your shotgun has barrels 26" or longer and has barrel wall thickness of .025 or greater you at home free!

If you ever get around to taking the side plates off I would be curious to see if it had Francotte marks on the inside. I have a sidelock like yours and the quality inside take a back seat to no one.

Thanks for the support Doug...The seller claimed it has 28" barrels, but I did not get a chance to measure them when I was looking at the gun at the shop. I'm waiting for a Darne to come in and when it does, I'll pick them up and be able to put up some better pictures.

I think I solved the mystery. It appears to be an Emile Warnant. The makers mark punch is a bit strange, but it appears to have an EW under a star. It has bushed strikers and appears to have gas valves in the fences. The selective ejectors are strong. It makes me sad that this gun was not maintained as it should have been. It is very nice. 6.6 lbs with 27.5" barrels. Sadly, my pictures fail to show how lovely the wood and the shadows and depth of the engraving. The rib is marked either with the owner or retailers name of "W.A.M. Valkenburg A. Tilburg". Please share your thoughts or redirect me if you feel my conclusions on the gun are incorrect. I love to learn.

Well, I think you have it right. The E.W. is indeed Emile Warnant. The other maker with the same initials is Ernest Wilmart but in that case it is indicated on the water table E. WILMART.You have a very good buy with this gun. I don't know if W.A.M. is still in business today but I visited the shop in the 70th in the Willem II street.
Cheers, Marc.
