Today was the first time I have ever hunted with a hammergun. It's a Husqvarna Model 100 in 12 gauge. Nice light gun at 6.13 lbs with 27.5" barrels. Choked full and X-full it makes it a bit difficult to hit fast moving close targets. I need to buy some spreader loads for it I think. I was shooting Kent Gamebore 2.5" shells in #6 "diamond" shot. Walking around a still standing corn field I flushed a few doves which flew straight into the bordering trees. Miss. I did manage to hit this rabbit with it. I have to say after always carrying hammerless guns, this was quite different and I constantly found myself reaching for the safety with my thumb. It was 12 degrees when I got out into the field this morning, but it was fun to be out nonetheless.

I hope everyone had a merry Christmas...

Sounds wonderful. Nice photos, nice area and that's a large cottontail.

It was 14 degrees on our friend's farm in MO today and we didn't see any squirrels during my first hunt with the new 28 gauge. Yes squirrels deserve a .22 but the farmer has cattle and requested scatterguns to be used. It was just nice to be out with my dad is a 4x cancer survivor. He introduced me to hunting 40 years ago and I'm still jazzed to have a day in the field with him.

Nice rabbit, great gun. Where were you that it was so warm?

I'm in Pennsylvania...

I noticed later that one of the Gamebore shells had a pierced primer. Are these shells known for having thin primers, or are the firing pins possibly protruding too far? Should I try a different brand of 2.5" shell (RST or Polywad) or is this a more serious concern that should be looked at by a smith?

Congrats on making the leap and getting a rabbit! The only rabbits I've flushed this year have been in grouse or woodcock cover. Not much time to shoot with a young unsteady cocker in hot pursuit. So far I haven't even shouldered the gun on one. Woodcock closed here on Christmas Day. Just in time for the hard freeze up north to send the last holdouts moving south.

One pierced primer from just a handful of shots is a pretty high failure rate. You've laid out the options: try shooting some more--with the same or different shells--and see if the one failure was a random abberation or get it to a pro right away for a check up. I tend to send guns in for inspection shortly after receiving them--I've made a couple expensive mistakes by not doing so. I don't know that you'd run a terrible risk in shooting it a bit, but if there were any more indication that something was off, I'd pack it off to someone who knows hammer doubles.

Interesting Husqvarna, first one I see with bar action locks. On all the Husqs I examined the internal lock work was top class.
