I and a couple of friends were looking at a very sleek and trim 12b shotgun labeled L. Oschitz Stetten (give or take a spelling error or two). This appears to be a German/Suhl gun that I have never heard of. It has trigger bar locks and is therefore very narrow in the breech to make a very nice 6# 6 oz gun with 30" barrels. Quite the Sweetheart, but I've never heard of the maker, assuming Stetten is the maker and not the owner. This was stamped on an island in the top rib matting. With the Greener crossbolt it seemed like a very strong, yet very light 12 bore and a couple of us are tempted to buy it.

Can anyone tell me about the maker and the value/utility/durability of these guns?

What about Leopold Oschatz of Stettin / Pommern(By the Sea)? It is a Polish area or island area. Does it date to the mid 1920s?

That is conceivable. I can't date it other than by patina, and that is certainly reasonable. I wish I had it in my hand, but it is not mine - yet. Darn interesting gun though.

I spent several summers at youth camp outside Stetten. As an American you don't need OShits. Brent and OShits no Brent and L.C. Smith, Parker, Fox is match made in heaven. Nice American man need nice American classic shotgun. I would prefer something sold through Danzig, Pozen or Breslau, but Stetten will do. If you give me contact info I will take the OShits.

Looks like Büchsenmacher Leopold Oschatz of Stettin was active as early as 1902 in the Stettin address book?

https://books.google.com/books?id=MZgwAA...tin&f=false

Fr. Kühner Nachfolger - Büchsenmacherei, Inhaber Leopold Oschatz, Roßmarkt 8(& I've seen Roßmarkt 5)

Not sure about German proof mark, time periods. No month and year marked as I'm used to seeing on a Simson or Sauer. Bores marked 13/1. Hope that may provide another clue age. The wee little main springs are so cute!

If of German origin, and it doesn't wear the word "NITRO" it may date to pre-1912.

Well, I bought it. It will be a couple of weeks before I get it due to circumstances, but it is coming home.

N under a crown rather than Nitro might also be found. Re the fractional gauge marks (13/1 etc), those were part of the proof law of 1891. That was also when the actual gauge of the gun (12 etc) inside a circle became a required mark.
