Here's a link to the sale, it's always interesting to see what's selling.
The link is for the sidelock ejectors, the other categories are at the bottom of the page.
There was some nice stuff there.

Thanks for posting the link. The Rigby DR went well over their estimate. They were close on the other sold lots.

Compare the actual prices realized with what typical dealers here in the states want for Brit SLEs.
Eye opening.

Looking at lot 1808, a Purdey bar in wood hammer gun. Would it make any economical sense to purchase this gun at 1800 and have someone like Kirk sleeve it?

I was looking at the WR drop lock, lot 1401. Went for 5,000. Opinions on value after cost of bringing to US?

Yes, but there were some doggie guns in that auction and there are a bunch of doggie english guns for sale here as well.

Some interesting guns that sold were; Boss ra self-opening 12 for 16k without bp, Piotti 28 o/u: 30K, a Rigby magazine .303 for 5500. The crossover stock Boss o/u sold for 14500 pounds- one bid- sold...

CJF,

I can't tell if the prices listed include the 25 percent buyers premium. Also, the price for the WR is 5000 = ~$6350. I would add ~$1500 (export/import) to get the gun in your hands. And the big kicker is no return.

I watched the auction off and on throughout the day. Very interesting. The Crossover Boss OU had thin barrels. I missed the first pair of refurbished purdeys at 10k. The second pair made 14k with even thinner barrels. I suppose that exemplifies the "originality premium."

Last gun I considered bringing into this country was an antique which is easier and cheaper to do. Holt's offered to handle everything on their end, for a fee, which is not cheap, with freight, insurance, having someone get it through customs for me, I figured it would have been $750-800.00. I could have saved $100-150 if I did my end myself but if I had a problem I'd have to deal with it and that could have been a lot of extra time.

There are some who will do it for less, if you can wait until they can bring in several at a time. It does get a little cheaper but still not cheap. And they are doing it to make a little money but they are not getting rich at it. Gone are the days I could get an antique gun shipped to my door for $200-250.00. Those were the days.

No, the prices in that link do not include the Buyers Premium which is either 25% or 22.5%.

It usually costs me in the neighborhood of $1K to import a single gun. Several different fees along the way including paying a Customs Broker at an airport at the end of the deal. Someone like SKB (I think that is his handle) imports several at a time and that can reduce costs. Using Westley Richards in Florida can probably cut down on importing costs some too.

The thumb nail descriptions on some of those guns can be misleading. You actually need a Condition Report from Holts to ascertain the exact condition of the gun. Then if there are any red flags from the Condition Report you may want to hire someone to go by and do an independent inspection for you.

There are deals to be had. That said you need to be careful. The auction room usually has some very knowledgeable folks in it and "steals" are hard to come by.

I have seen though guns go through Holts auction and a couple of months later show up on US Dealers websites, the internet gun dealers, for double what the gun sold for at Holts.

So yes good deals can be made at Holts. You just need to be thorough in your evaluation of what you want to bid on and understand there will be some costs in addition to the final winning bid price.
