I didn't fire a single shot. Actually I didn't even take a firearm as it was the Junior dove hunt conducted by Arizona Dept of Game and Fish at the Robbins Butte wildlife area. There were about 150 junior hunters accompanied by non hunting parents/grandparents. Many tiny little guys and girls, some as young as 8 years old, toting just about every varity of shotgun. There were many kids in full camo, more wearing some hunter orange and even some teenage girls, more concerned with fashion than mosquitos,in makeup, tank tops and shorts. They weren't giving anything away to the boys in birds taken either.

After a safety/procedure briefing they were all transported to marked stands by haywagon and waited for the dawn to arrive. The birds arrived on cue, mostly White Wings this year, and the guns chattered steadily. I limited my grandson to 50 shells for the day in an effort to limit the punishment so he would want to shoot again another day. His shooting is just developing and his bag was about average - one bird per box of shells. Having shot preserve pheasants pretty well he was more than amazed when the doves ignored his best efforts. It was priceless to watch his jaw drop when a Mourning Dove gave him the old dippsy doodle, dropping about 10 feet and swapping directions about 90 degrees, almost taking his hat off.

Chandler gun club fed the entire hunt breakfast about 7:00am - which is their established voluntary custom. That was followed by a retriever club demonstration and other hunt related activities. I think everyone had a great time. Since this needs to be double gun related, my grandson was carrying his Mirouku Daly 20ga SxS. We had a great gun cleaning and post mortem session over a soda on the back patio at home.

That's great Jerry that you're taking your grandson out. Good for you. I have several nephews that I've wanted to take out, but none of them have shown much interest. Hmpf.

What a great way to spend a morning Jerry and lets hear it for AGFD! Any other states offer youth dove hunts? Kansas offers special youth pheasant hunts.

Jerry, if you don't mind, I'll share your post, sans name, of course, with our Littlestown Fish & Game. It would be wonderful to see a program such as yours get started in this area, and hosted by our club. Thank you for posting this event.

I don't know about the state as a hole, but they do offer youth dove hunts at Silver Springs State Park in Yorkville, Illinois. Unfortunately, like nearly everything else here, you have to register months in advance.

Mike Poore, help yourself to using my message. And if it will help, you can have them contact me for further information should they wish. AZ Game and Fish also has Junior hunts for pheasant, deer, turkey and elk. They are doing what they can to promote the shooting sports and recruit the next generation of hunters. We just need the parents to get the kids out there and the various sportsman's clubs to throw a little support behind the kids as well by helping host the events. The volunteer Hunter Education Instructors also provide a lot of manpower to carry out these kid oriented events.

Thanks Jerry. Be assured that I will, and hopefully get a program like yours started through the system, via the Pennsylvania Federation of Sportsman's Clubs. The notion of warm weather and lots of shooting should really apeal to the youngsters.

Jerry and all. Just wanted you to know the Youth Dove Hunt has gotten its formal start at our Fish & Game Club, tonight. Our membership enthusiastically supported a recommendation to take the program before the PA Federation of Sportsman's Clubs, and from there, with approval, it will go to the state committee, and on to the PA Game Commission. It's a long road, but a start, thanks to Jerry's post about the program.

reb87 there were a couple but most of the guns were NEF singleshots or Rem 870 junior versions.
