Hi, I have the opportunity to buy a 16ga Bill Hanus Birdgun. I think it was made in the 80's. It is made by Ugartechea and imported through Texas. It is a nice minty gun. The chokes check out, sk1 and sk2. My concern is the chambers. The barrel flats have the 16-70 stamp. When I check the chamber length though, my Galazan bore gauge reads 3 1/4" chambers. The chambers and bores look factory polished with no tool marks. Did Bill Hanus spec these guns with extended forcing cones or was it done aftermarket ? Thanks , terc

Forcing cone lengthening wouldn't affect chamber length. You seem to be saying the chambers are 1/2" longer than stamped?
And you're not using a chamber gauge but a bore gauge?

Rob, A Galazan chamber gauge bottoms out at 3 1/4"s. I do have a bore gauge for measuring chokes. When I push it into the chamber the dial shows a constant reduction in diameter until it reaches 3 1/4"s. Thanks again, terc

Hello Terc,
Three inches and a quarter are 95.25mm, a whole inch more than stated. Something seems to be off if the gun is stamped 16-70 (70mm chamber or 2.75").
JC
P.S.: clearly wrong with above statement, 3 and 3/4 inches are 95.25mm 3 and 1/4" are 82.55mm as stated below. Sorry.

I did some more measuring after work. Sorry, I should have taken more time this morning. I don't know if this will make a difference or not. The chambers taper .004"/inch for the first 2 3/4". At 2 3/4" the taper increases to .024"/inch until my gauge bottoms out at about 4 1/4 ". Maybe it is just a standard forcing cone job and my flat Galazan gauge is misleading me. terc

Just so everyone is clear, 3.25 inches is 82.6mm, and a 70mm chamber should measure out about 2.76 in.

The .004"/inch is the chamber. The .024"/inch is the forcing cone reducing down to bore size. As the end of the chamber is normally about .070" over nominal bore size of .729" @ .024"/inch it would take near to an additional 3" to reach bore size. The .024"/inch over 1˝" (4Ľ"-2 3/4") would only give .036" reduction or about half the normal amount. What does your bore diameter read?

Might be more important to measure the minimum barrel thickness where the chamber/forcing cone has been opened or lengthened. The longer chamber shouldn't affect the patterns the gun throws; and as long as the barrel thickness at the chamber is acceptable the gun should be alright even if the chambers have been messed with...Geo

Piper, My gauge only reaches in about 4 1/4". The forcing cone is still tapering at .024"/inch at that point. I'm assuming the taper continues to the the bore. This is a 16ga. terc
