TexasGerd,
Thanks for letting all of us know that you are there, and for letting us know of the extra effort Daniel put forth. Makes me feel good to know that the man who is receiving my money for my subscription is that kind of person. I'm a bit jealous of anyone who receives their DGJ before me, except for you and you peers. I would gladly wait if it meant you could receive yours first. You deserve that and more. Thank you for your service to our nation. I am grateful.
Stan
May God bless America and those who defend her.

Dan: Thanks for your service and keep us posted on how you are doing and anything we can pass along to you. Wow, five tours - and I thought one 13 month tour in Viet Nam as a Marine was too long.
Stay safe,
Mike

Dan--Stay safe . . . certainly don't need to tell you to "stay warm" for the next 2-3 months! Drop by whenever you get a chance and let us know how you're doing. I spent 30+ years in the Guard/Reserve and did a bunch of active duty, but always voluntarily. These days, no matter whether you're Active or Reserve, you're almost certain to end up where you are. Thanks very much for your service! 5 tours . . . that's gotta be above and beyond.

King either has his own socialist agenda or chooses to forget how our troops were treated after coming back from Viet Nam.

Pete, no particular ideology is needed to accept that our men and women serve where they're sent, to do or die for what the ruling party sees as the country's self interest, without opprobrium or victimhood attached to them. Dishonouring the Viet Nam veterans was shameful. I never met or saw a person in your country or mine discredit those who saw their duty and did it.

Pete, you got me thinking of why the aberration, the dishonouring of those who served in Viet Nam---I was covering another war nearby---and I recall a discussion among Pakistani infantry officers of the fratricidal fragging. Perhaps that and an unpopular war were the root of it.

The "Vietnam disrespect" makes good press, but in my 24 months travelling around in class A Army uniforms, 1967 to 1969, I had no trouble hitching rides and being given first class airline seats on "half price standby" status. I guess most of this disrespect happened on the left coast. Sorry, I just never saw it.

I can tell you that the disrespect seemed at it's height in 1972+. It was not limited to the west coast but very prevalent there and covered by the press more. I hope we never have that circumstance again, but I fear a redux with the current growing discontent. Some in America believe war is a video game and a sign pops up "Game Over".
Support our troops and their families, they serve us well...all the time!

The mention I made of my experiences during the Vietnam era doesn't mean I agree with my friend King's statement about the feelings of liberals toward the military (as well as law enforcement) . I think that many hard core liberal thinkers have nothing but contempt for those who choose to make their living enforcing laws and protecting our heritage. I was merely stating that I did not experience the disrespect of my country while I was in uniform. I agree with Pete in that we both think that there are those that are infected with that disrespect.

Eightbore, my point in both messages was that I never encountered the disrespect. I have no idea where it came from, liberal or otherwise.
Jim's note, however, may be prophetic: "Some in America believe war is a video game and a sign pops up "Game Over". Not only in the U.S., my friend.
On national radio today, two serving Canadian soldiers described their tours in Afghanistan as "fun" and "enjoyable," "just watch your front and back" and they'd recommend it to anybody. One had both legs blown off.
They might as well have given the bomb to al Qaeda---and the majority of our citizens who don't think the dying and misery is a game. Could a coddled generation brought up on Nintendo think of war as a game?
