Internet anonymity...In certain cases can cause rude, disrespectful and just plain bizarre behavior. Unfortunately; this can manifest as off color, rude, overtly aggressive or irrelevant posts on the board.

Periodically (way more than I'd like); I get complaints about the antics of certain users on the board. I can only assume that the digital world has some how compromised their ability to be considerate and respectful of other members.

Although I am typically in agreement concerning the complaints I do not wish to actively moderate the forum for various reasons.

So in lieu of my whacking a user I'd like to remind all of you about a very useful feature available to all registered users.

The feature is called "Ignore a User".

You can choose to ignore the posts of a particular user, if you wish. Posts from an ignored user will still be shown to preserve the flow of the conversation; however, the body of the ignored user’s posts will be set to “You are ignoring this user”. To ignore a user, click his/her username to go to the profile and click “ignore this user”.

Thank you all for your participation and your patience with these individuals.

Dave:
Why don't you delegate moderation responsibilities to a couple of members of the forum that are willing to take this on?

Sigh.
Dave has given us freedom. For his own reasons.
Do we not understand the Grace & responsibility that comes with that ?
Why do you once again feel the need to turn back to the law & appoint kings over the people ?

Because once he stars moderating, people who don't like what's said in the posts he doesn't excise can drag him into any legal dispute they might start with the person who wrote the offensive text. The same would apply to people he might delegate as moderators.

the issue is... some here I have elected to ignore, which is just fine. the problem is unless the rest of the users ignore him, his comments still remain posted as insulting and degrading for all others to see.
this causes me negative publicity.
and it degrades your website.
and it degrades me.
look, I understand freedom of speech and the liberal tolerance agenda, but rules are designed to keep order. and in all public settings, a lawless environment just breeds more lawlessness, as those who practice it get to improve upon it.

websites are suppose to be a gathering of like minds and like attitudes.
some here lack common sense and basic gentleman like character.
none of which belongs here.
pick me. I have nothing better to do than to start poofing memberships. and i would be glad to do it.
being ex-military and a retired NAVY CPO, it would be like water off a ducks back.
I do it on other numerous websites and its just the flick of a switch. let me at em! you know what I mean too. :>
I spoke my peace.

B.S: Practically ANY OTHER online forum has moderators and in the 20+ years I've been online I don't know of a single instance of a moderator having legal trouble of any kind. If you know of a case where a moderator was involved in a legal dispute due to moderating point us to it.
A moderators responsibility is to make sure members abide by the rules and insure that within reason a topic starting a thread stays on track.

Not BS, but it is of course complicated, and way beyond my comprehension. It appears that owner moderators may be sued (or at least threatened) if they fail to edit/delete a comment they know to be false, ESP. if the moderator has some financial connection to the person making the false comment.

And it appears volunteer moderators have some exposure

Then again, it's Dave's site, and he can do what he wants. Any one of us are free to start our own site, and pay for the necessary legal advice.

Yeah I read all the legal gobligook in the above post links and will re-ask the question:
Show One instance where a forum moderator has been charged and successfully sued for their actions when moderating a forum? IMO no responsible site operator is going to permit someone to moderate that may even come close to putting them in this position.
I have seen some very heated exchanges on forums particularly related to the condition or originality of firearms with generally extreme differences of opinion and have yet to see a moderator legally held liable for it.
I have been personally slandered(actually libeled since it is in writing) in every way imaginable by certain elements on this forum but know darn well suing them would be a waste of time and money. I just put them on my ignore list and let it go at that.

Tort law Jim. Personal injury or harm. Not criminally "charged".
That which you call gobligook (gobbledigook?) may cost you a great deal of money. Lack of understanding therof is not a defense.
