Does anyone have experience with John Gillette?

John was often recommend by Ken, our resident engraver on this board. It is not so much who does the job but how well they can match the Original factory finish. To me it seems like every maker had their own case color look. Some with more blues, some with more straw colors in them. I have had several guns recolored but now find the new colors to be too brash, too vivid. Maybe I just want a little aging to look more natural. Maybe I look too old in company of a young looking gun. wink

And you most likely look at it form time to time and say....money well spent!!...right Bill?

Like my signature implies.....

I'm not saying these colors are the best at replicating original Parker Bros. case colors, but what I'm saying is that the bone and charcoal case colors on this Parker Reproduction were applied by John Gillette of Classic Guns, LTD.

We appreciate the pictures and the nice job of bone charcoal on this gun. I read in the Parker Story, Remington had problems with replicating the case colors from Meriden.
My hat's off to Brad, Doug and John for their artistry.

These are from a very late Remington GHE I used to own...100% original gun, colours and coverage...gun was hardly shot
The translucency in the colours is not a coincidence, they need a certain brightness to look correct.

My VH project was, or is, as close as I would expect for Parker work. It is a 216,000 range gun and is up to my standards. I own maybe six or more benchmark guns and I like my project VH as well as any of them. I am not much of a recolor guy, this being my first, and probably last. However, this VH screamed for a full refinish, and it got one. However, I'm sure there are others, like Brad, who can do a similar job. Cladio is right on the money with his comments about brightness and translucency. Some collectors who post pictures of their guns don't understand that such characteristics are missing from their guns.

There is NO debate. Turnbull is the ONlY shop getting accurately reproduced colors on Parker guns. Period.

Opinions aside or who is buddies with who... it is just the fact of the matter.

Of course, with good gunsmiths, a year usually turns into a year and a half and that's ok with me.

Turnbull does not farm out their coloring. I am 30 mins from Turnbulls. Every action I drop off is polished and ready to go. And i have them back usually in a week. You cant ship them back and forth that quick. And... the colors from the two shops look nothing alike... SO... not true.

Colors are wonderful, but they were a by product of the surface hardening for wear resistance, and the softer, tougher interior. I've seen a Parker trigger plate that had great colors shatter during removal to fix the broken stock. Has anyone Rockwell hardness tested before and after ? What good are the colors, if the surface hardening is lost?
