It is close season now ...
...
The Viennese auction house Dorotheum has an online auction on "Historical weapons, Uniforms & Militaria" feb 23.
Two lots may have an appeal to a collector/hunter.
1. Lot 238
Guncase from noble wood ("Edelholz") by Fückert/Weipert.
A deluxe piece with a medaillon from non-rusting white metal, plus an inlay from mother-of-pearl,
with framing on the cover from same white metal.
Corners flattened and covered with a striped veneer (tulipwood ?).
Compartments and internal lining removed.
An item for a Czech vintage collector and/or the Hungarian Fückert collector fraternity.
2. Lot 312
Navy officers gaiters.
How come an inland country to such "maritime" objects ?
Once upon a time this country had an emperor , he declared war in 1914, lost it,
empire gone, navy gone, no more navy officers , this belongs to the remains of
bygone Austrian navy.
In near new condition.
What is this good for?
There are 2 types of hunting where ankle-tight shoes complemented by gaiters are
mandatory, instead the ubiquitous rubber boots.
The one is hunting grouse behind dogs in the steep hills of the Scottish Highlands,
the second one is hunting hares on freshly ploughed and frozen ground in Bohemia.
Early warning: The lot has an "imperial" price tag on it.
....
3. It is close season time.
Here a 3 photos of a visit to this flat Neusiedler-See in Eastern Austria.
Surrounded by hills, all covered with wineyards.
The lake with its reeds a haven for waterfowl.
To do what there ? Feed wild ducks and wild geese and gulls.
These are accustomed that the pedestrians do feed .

Great info there Mr. Neuberger. >>Hungarian Fückert collector fraternity<<: I wouldn't mind being included in that number. Pour it on; remain ever stalwart......

I do have a funny about pedestrians & geese. Years ago whilst in grad school @ University in North Alabama, most of my classmates were either Asian or Indian, typical for the discipline. Anyway, there was an Asian Cat that everyday went to the small pond on campus to feed the resident Canadian Geese. He had something like a hatchback-Subaru. First he fed corn sort of coarse or broad but within a week or two, he narrowed the trail of corn towards the Hatchback, that was open. At the conclusion, he had the Canadian Geese right up @ the Hatchback & he pulled out a baseball bat(or tennis racket) and clubbed himself a few Geese. Needless to say, Campus Police made an arrest.

A. Fresh to the market ..
....A Joh. Kalezky 's Witwe 20 bore, SLE
A thread in the doublegun BBs section appeared with the title "J Kalezky 20"
started by "ksauers1" with some posts.
I will provide some answers here under my thread instead under the initial one.
Turning 84 this weekend, I thought I will make me a present and
sent an e-mail to the seller asking on min-barrel-thicknesses, serial-nr , proofmarks...
I have never bought and will never buy a gun without barrel-measurements by me
or a person I trust.
I called also the seller.
The gun already sold.
The photos tell me the gun has not been "done-up-for-sale/embellished", the
script on the barrel still clearly readable, nothing reblacked, probably
for sale as found
The serial nr is 2171, for a genuine Kalezky-built gun, fitting into the
number range in the vicinity.
No proof-marks nor barrel-measurements known.
To be fair with the seller he is telling he has a
"e-commerce businness / click-to-buy-business-model".
What may be a mandatory info for a gun-collecotor may be simply
an undue requirement for an e-commerce shop..
..
You dont ask the Amazon e-commerce empire for a condition report
on a Chinese garment or a bottle of German Riesling.
Guns are already on this merchandise level.
......
Proofmark:
I have tried to intrapolate it from a 16-bore which emerged in the
1990's in US and a pair of Hungaro/Russian 12-bores.
It is probably 92.02 NPv.
The Hungaro/Russian pair has similar shape as this one.
...
# 1 is in Hungary, #2 in Russia. As usual, once an Internet knowledgable Moscow cowboy
has found out what his grandpa has brought back as WW II booty, he believes
he is a millionaire
....
The chokes are on the verge to 3/4 chokes.
THE Kalezky hare-gun configuration, with the obliterated crest on the triggerguard
with high probability another WW II booty from a noble house.
In 1902 as pair NOT available for folks with working-class-salary.
As a 20-bore possibly for an aristo-octogenarian who no longer could
afford to walk 20 km on frozen freshly-ploughed ground to hunt hares hiding behind
clods.
Rather waiting to get these driven towards him.
.....
I am curious if the gun sooner or later will reappear on the market, as
it has a choke masochistic for a birdhunter.
...
Why then a 84-years oldie , addicted to light-weight
open-choked English 12-bore birdguns,
should go for such a 120 years old J.Kalezky 20-bore hare-hunting museum-piece,
by all means the most unnecessary gun to go for....
Raimey/ellenbrs has told in his post under the original thread
"We are all odd ducks....
...
B. Fresh to the market / continued
...A J. Kalezky DB rifle SLE in 8x75..
Few years ago a Californian hunter contacted me and told me he has bought
a Kalezky DB rifle at an auction there.
Asking me to provide him a label for guncase, which I did.
This is the first emergence of an Kalezky DB rifle SLE I ever came across.
Here is a photo of the Kalezky catalogue page on this type of rifle.
...
https://www.jpgbox.com/page/68959
...
I checked the history page of the auction house which still has photos of the rifle
available.
.....
C. Fresh to the market / continued
.... 40000 ha Austrian hunting grounds on the market for rent
....
Who has such quantity of grounds for rent?.
This country has never been a commie country, the one commie riot post-1945
failed / contrary to neighbouring countries.
Never any type of expropriation / contrary to neighbouring countries.
Thus there still exist huge paläo-feudal properties/estates.
.....
An Austrian hunting license is combined with the subscription of a hunting
magazine. The last one contained a flyer on "Pannatura",
a subcompany of one of these feudal empires.
As usual, the legal construct of these feudal empires based on
a half dozen of "Privatstiftung" companies located in Liechtenstein.
Offering hunts on one of their total of 40000 ha of grounds, on open fields, forests
and water/reed areas.
Given this massive ad campaign it seems they are in trouble to find customers.
No wonder , friends of mine had rented one of their "Jagdrevier".
They seem to confuse a customer with a subordinate/subject.
Their experience "Avoid them".

Was it worth the money someone spent on it? I thought so but don't know enough about guns to take a chance on an out of the ordinary maker.

A victim of the EU-Waffenrichtlinie and its associated Austrian implementation of mandatory registration of all shotguns by dec 13 2021.
.....
JSE had in their yearend 2021 silent auction a huge volume of lots triggered by this due date.
In between a very nice vintage J. Heinige 16-bore hammer gun unsold at 350 E.
I have included in a previous post a photo , repeated here under its jpgbox
https://www.jpgbox.com/page/67037
It is reentered in their next silent auction , reduced to 240 E.
I had a more detailed look on it now.
It is a 16/65 hammer gun, damascus barrels , in crisp low-use condition. I took off the barrels.
The proof mark is 2155.98 by Weipert for black powder ,
identified by the eagle with number 3, the crossed hammers,
and the letter W within a mark, the golden script "J. Heinige in Wien" as the name of the retailer.
JSE has kindly sent me a photo of the marks on the barrelflats, but due to oversize
I could not upload it into the jpgbox.
Who built it in 1898 in Weipert? Possibly Gustav Gittner based on the nr 25 on the barrelflats
and the forepart. But a check into the Weipert records in the Prague proofhouse would provide final clue.
How come , a 124 years old vintag damascus hammer gun with low mileage now into the auction.
Possibly the grandpa who ordered it 1898 did not return from WW I battelfields.
And all the heir generations kept it in honor of the grandpa.
Till the great-grand-son generation finally decided to part with the gun as now longer being
able to keep it unregistered and thus unobserved.
Why not reproof it with nitro ?
Austria does NOT nitro-proof damascus barrels.
Why ?
-We are more catholic than the pope
-We want to protect the non-existing Austrian steel-barrel-making fraternity
The German proofhouse in Munich would accept it for reproof.
If it passes nitro-proof ok , if not bad luck.
....
What else is in this aution worthwile to mention here ?
An Anton Sodia Over/under in 16/65 with narrow chokes (Hare-gun) and
usual Kersten-Verschluss above the usual Ferlach trigger-plate (Blitz) action.
At inviting start price of 120 E.
Much bent of the stock.
Anton Sodia has been a great Ferlach craftsman, esteemed by customers and
his competitors as well.
He broke when his son died in a car accident.
...
What else in this auction ?
For Arrieta afficionados.
A pair of 20/70 bores, SLE, with Holland Selfopener system, cased,
the sideplates with wonderfully executed Bulino-engraving of 2 ducks,
stock of nr 1 with hardly visible crack, something our Altmeister
Hans Jiricek would easily fix with a piece of Kornel-cherry and his tongue-groove-method.
Weight around 2800 g, short zone after chambers look frosty, either corrosion
or not cleaned plumb-residual. .
Start price 1500 E.
..
what else according April issue of Weidwerk hunting magazine ?
- The new CIC president is Austrian.
Hunter, lawyer, corporate manager in the agro/immo business world,
"ein gstandener Mann" and no "multi-function" polit-chap.
I hope he can contribute to preserve the hunting fraternity from the EU's idiosyncracies
and move hunting out from the present defensive and defenceless corner.
- Glorious Beretta is continuing its shopping frenzy.
After having bought Holland&Holland they will acquire Ruag
(RWS,Norma,Rottweil,Geco).
Viva bella Italia !

You may have to crop the pic to get it down to a manageable size due to jpgbox's small file restriction. I assume you mean 1898? Whale of a deal for the Heinige. Maybe Jani can pull it his way?
