The first Remington doubles offered were designed by Whitmore and E. Remington & Sons made several slightly different Models -- 1873, 1875, 1876, 1878 and 1879 before they changed to a conventional top lever hammer double with their Model 1882. The earliest Model did not have rebounding locks and there were ears on the slide part of the lifter that engaged flanges on the hammers and lifted then to half-cock when the gun was opened. Later guns had Hepburn patented rebounding locks.
Most models were made in grades 1 to 7 with the lowest having "decarbonized steel" barrels, then up thru twist, laminated and progressively finer Damascus barrels. Grades 4 and above sported increasing amounts of engraving.
