I'm lucky to have this rifle in my workshop to photograph for a Sports Afield Column. I finished the pics today and received a disk from Townsend Whelen Bowling with tons of info on Whelen, his rifles and the .35 Whelen. This may just be the prototype Howe/Whelen sight, somewhere I read that Howe only made one, I think it was in a Hoffman advertisement that TWB also sent... These are the only I've converted to low rez so far, and I've been at it all day. thought you might like a preview...

THANK YOU Those were powerful guns of their time!
My 35 Whelen is on an old 721 action that used to be a 300 H&H but got boggered up before I got it and I put an 06 bolt in it years ago.

Mine is a G&H custom, on a Mauser 98 action, built in 1938. I way prefer it for elk over a .338 Winchester Magnum, also mule deer, both in MT. A tad more than my M70 (1940) SG in 30-06 Springfield for deer in MI, but, as the late Elmer Keith once said: "You mean to say it kills them TOO dead?"- Damn fine caliber indeed.

Interesting that the base on the Griffin & Howe mount appears to be the late model, rather than the early model I would expect it to be. Also the bolt handle looks like a G&H job, like the one on my G&H Springfield sporter:

I'm currently having a Rem. M30 rebored to .35 Whelen for my upcoming moose hunt.
Because I've always wanted a .35 Whelen....
Steve, does TW's have a very long forend? Looks like it could or it could just be the angle of the shot.
My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income. - Errol Flynn

Is it just me? But it looks like the top edge of the forend is well below the center-line of the barrel.

Recoil Rob,
I had my Remington Model 30, be-barreled with a Shilen stainless barrel #3 contour and restocked with a synthetic MPI stock back in the mid 80's to the 35 Whelen AI version. I did it up for moose, bear, deer while hunting Kodiak, etc. while living in AK.
Although I kept the 375 H&H Sako, the 35 Whelen supplanted the 375 and I never felt under gunned!
Fixed it!

Nice rifle. I have an unidentified bolt peep which I will compare to this one.

Steve, does TW's have a very long forend? Looks like it could or it could just be the angle of the shot. The barrel is 26" long, the forend not overly long for the era. I don't have specific measurements, about half the length of the barrel.
Is it just me? But it looks like the top edge of the forend is well below the center-line of the barrel. Angle of the pic, makes it look that away.
I'm still not finished with the story or the photo editing, I'll try to post a few more pic soon. The owner picked up the rifle today. Very exciting to have in the shop!
Thanks for the interest and interesting comments~~ Steven
