Having been emboldened by Jack Rowe's gunsmithing videos, I decided to partially disassemble my Birmingham boxlock (without excessive bodgering and only to a degree I would be confident in the reassembly). I was looking for, and pleased to find, a dickie-bird type safety. I was also "inspecting" for general quality, not that I would know what to look for but you need to start somewhere wink

Look how well those internal parts are finished. Got to be a Brit.

He has been apart a few times.
What is his family name ?
Sorry, just looks like he is a male gun to me.

Putatively James Lang, but most likely trade sourced so some anonymous Birmingham craftsman. In any event, I am happy with the quality of workmanship and recognize that some servicing is in order at some point.

Other than by disassembly, are there any functional or visual clues to having a "dickie-bird" safety on a gun? Can you feel anything distinctive when you operate it?

Also, that doesn't appear to be a Scott spindle. Is that the Greener design?

Lloyd, it seems very smooth to operate compared to something like my old LC Smith. You may be able to feel the varying levels of resistance as the "dickie-bird" travels its path sort of like an eccentric cam lobe if I had to describe it.

I believe it is Greener lever work but I am no expert and would have to reference Haddoke's books at home to confirm.

If you like the internal finish open up a JP Saur of that era.

Lloyd, it looks like Greener lever work to me.

Dan, that looks like a very nice gun, can you post a top view photo of it?
