Francis, yes, those are my wife and daughter and thanks for the compliments. (You, too, Stan) As I noted in my first post, I also consider Islands in the Stream my favorite. Our daughter worked for the French Ministry of Education the week we were with her in Paris. She is fluent in French and taught English to high school age students in Bourges. Her ability to communicate with the locals made our visit all the more special as her smile and command of the language opened many doors for us. When folks would ask where we lived, she would tell them the city where Forrest Gump was filmed. "Ah, Forrest Gump. Oui!" they would exclaim while politely smiling.

Europe in general is a lot of fun!!! A lot of small, personal shops where customer service is paramount and a different pace to their society.

France (Paris and Lyon) Germany/Austria (anywhere, but I want to drive the Autobahn in a flat-out Porsche) and Italy- Florence- all on my bucket list. My current wife was a French History major (Oberlin College) and spent her junior and senior years in Paris- studying at the Sorbonne)- she is, like your charming gal, fluent in French--which is a huge help and also "ice-breaker" with the local folks- We shall see- Of course, being a bit of a "raccoon-tuner" at heart, I recall words from the late W.C. Fields- "I studied abroad for 4 years, then I found out she had taught me nothing, so I left her-"!!
"The field is the touchstone of the man"..

Hemingway's son Jack was the real adventurer in the family. Behind the lines in France in WWII with the OSS, forerunner of the CIA. (He parachuted into France carrying a fly rod.) One of the first Special Forces officers after the war. His autobiography is well worth reading. In it, he said something to the effect that he recognized it was his fate to be the son of a famous father, and a father of famous daughters.

Drive the autobahn in a Volkswagen pick-up truck and you'll get real tired of all those "Flat Out" Porsches.
