I think we may be over-generalizing in some cases. While my Ithaca SKB's barrels (monobloc) touch, my Webley & Scott, Jeffery, and Francotte boxlock barrels (shoe lump) also all touch. Fox Sterlingworth and Parker Reproduction (28ga) do not touch.

And what about this one : 30 in (exactly) Lefever barrels. Note: Full triangular top keel. The horizontal brown line is a scratch, not the division line of two pieces.

Marks_21, that is how the muzzles on the three Lefevers I was referring to look like.
I am glad to be here.

To the best of my recollection i have only ever owned one double fitted with Shoe Lumps. This is a VL&D Knock-About sidelock made by J P Sauer & Son. It is a 30" 7˝ lb gun & the barrels touch at the muzzle. A quick measurement by machinist 6" flexible scale shows a firing pin spacing Of 1 1/8", about normal for a gun of this weight. I see no reason why a shoe lumb barrel should be wider spaced than a chopper lump or dovetail lump. note when I say dovetail lump I am Not speaking of a Dovetailed Chopper Lump. Those are the ones which are generally wider spaced.

I believe what R.R. wrote that if Fox needed a set of #4 26 inch barrels and none in parts rack that they would cut a set of 30 or 32 inch down to 26 inches.I prefer barrels touching as it make a narrower muzzle. Bobby
