Why dont you see more woodcock engravings? I see more ducks engraved than any other species, even on subgauge guns. Is woodcock shooting a regional thing, similar to the shorter bamboo rods from the catskills of that era?

My completely uneducated response:

Woodcock aren't as widely distributed and are harder to hunt with less payoff (lbs per bird) than ducks, so I think duck hunting is probably more popular. Sub gauges with duck engravings do seem a little funny though...

Chapuis and Merkel both engrave woodcocks. I only know that because those two brands are the two I'm considering as my "big" shotgun purchase.

W/O seeing one, I'd suggest that some of those birds on the big Parkers are snipe.

Then there are the elusive 'flying turnips' seen on some guns;-) So who knows what the inspiration was at the time? I used to shoot w/a gentleman that had a train engraved on his gun. To my knowledge, he never bagged one:-)

From mid-1915 on the Flues Model through the end of the NID, Ithaca had this Woodcock like bird on the right side of their No. 2, in everything from .410-bore to Magnum-Ten. Here on a 28-gauge and Super-Ten NIDs --

Those pointy tip wings make this bird a snipe.
