Greetings from Coffee Country!

I've been aware of the DoubleGunShop for awhile now, thanks to friends who hang out here and mention it occasionally on other forums we frequent, but until recently I've had no opportunity to participate here due to a lack of a doublegun or the opportunity to acquire the same. I'm a US citizen whose current country of residence is Colombia, where legal firearms are strictly controlled, to say the least. Our local gun club sold the property where we were a couple years ago and we've been looking ever since for a place where we can shoot something more than pistols at 25/50 yards. We're putting in an offer to acquire a suitable range site and if that becomes a reality then I'll be doing my best to scare up a good double to use there, plans being to build Skeet, Trap and Sporting Clays ranges. I've been asking around to see what's available and the main issue is finding one with transferable papers as the red tape is tremendous even among those of us who belong to the national shooting and hunting federation. My preference is for a side by side with double triggers (exposed hammers would be a plus) but what is most common are overunders and most of those seem to have single triggers.

Anyway, one transferable 12 bore showed up recently, it's a J. J. Sarasqueta Viuda e Hijos bored * and *** (that'd be full and modified, if I'm not mistaken) This brand is not known to me so I'm curious if you folk might know anything about it. It is NOT Victor Sarasqueta nor Felix Sarasqueta, it's JJ Sarasqueta Viuda e Hijos. So far I've not seen the shotgun itself, just pictures, nor do I have any pictures available to me yet so as to share them with you. At this point I'm just digging for info on the brand, mostly to know if it's something that one should stay away from or if they are decent shotguns for light use (the cost of ammo and targets being high enough it's not likely to be heavily used by yours truly down here).

Thanks for any input on this brand. I look forward to learning from you folk.

Welcome. Best source I have is the book Spanish Best by Terry Weiland. Viuda y Hijos means Widow and sons of J J Sarasqueta. Very little info other than that and some mention of possible relation ship to others of that name. The author believes that it was a small one or two man concern with small output of boxloxk and sidelock doubles. Someone else will no doubt come in with further information. Lagopus.....

Thank you! Yes, indeed, "Viuda E Hijos" means Widow and Sons, and if my memory serves me the lettering was actually an abbreviation thereof - but the exact lettering escapes my memory. I'm not sure what model number it was (or even if there WAS a model number) as the pictures were shown to me with no way to copy and I was mostly interested in getting a general feel for the piece than in memorizing the exact lettering of the stamping.

It looks like a well built piece, from what I could make out in the pics. What didn't appeal to me was an odd "firesight" type "bead" perhaps two thirds of the way up the rib (IIRC). Overunders have never been my thing, but ANY legal shotgun available for transfer here is a rarity.

I'm very curious about the brand as in the typically machista Spanish culture it is not that common for a woman to take over the manufacturing business of her husband. Something I stumbled across on a Spanish language forum said something about JJ Sarasqueta NOT being a close relative to Felix or Victor, but I'm not sure of the reliability of the source yet. Still digging for info. smile Again, thanks for the feedback!

J. J. (Juan José) Sarasqueta was the elder brother of Victor Sarasqueta. J.J. Sarasqueta founded his shotgun making business in 1882 and his descendants, trading under the name Vda. y Hijos de JJ Sarasqueta, published their Centennial catalog in 1982. Victor began his gun making career working in the shop of his brother, J.J., before opening his own business.

Like just about all the Spanish artisanal shotgun makers of Spain, J. J. Sarasqueta made shotguns to every price point at which a demand existed. You’re more likely to encounter a gun made to a low price point than a high price point simply because the market is larger at the bottom than the top, but his guns at all price points were well made, durable, and reliable. His top end guns (like those of his brother, Victor) were just exquisite.

Thanks! That is indeed helpful information. If my inquiries into SXS's continue to turn up nothing I'll be giving this piece a closer look. They showed me a pic of the proofhouse certificate, but I don't recall what date (if any) was on it. But I get the feeling that this is probably a 60's or 70's era (maybe as late as the 80's) gun.

AmBraCol, here are a couple of pictures of my model 115 side-lock JJ Sarasqueta. It is a 'widow & sons" as is the one you are considering:

I think it is a good quality firearm. I have a copy of the 100th anniversary catalog from 1982. I do not think the firm traded for very long after that...Geo

Thanks, Geo! I'd LOVE to find something like that down here. So far, no go. The feelers are out, we'll see what the folks down here help me turn up.
