I have shipped long guns to an FFL via the Post Office. Note, only an FFL can put a handgun in the mail.

If I was ever to ship a very valuable gun, I would make sure it was insured and I would make sure that I had some sort of official looking receipt or appraisal in the eventuality that I needed to prove that the gun I shipped really was worth that much. Just because you insure something for a particular amount does not mean that the insurer will agree it was worth what you declared.
