Beautiful work Doug.

Carved "Popsicle" sticks shaped with a "blade" edge works well in rib joints.

Doug, could you comment upon how much material can be removed before the need for recutting the engraving?

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

Rob:

Different types of engraving are cut at different depths and there is no 'standard answer' to your question.

People I know and associate with who refinish guns, never speak of "how much material can be removed" before a recut is required. Only when refinishing badly rusted guns is engraving and lettering removed and most guys stay clear of guns in poor rusted condition such as those mentioned above.

People who use power tools to polish gun parts usually damage and remove a degree of lettering and engraving. People who polish gun parts by hand seldom, if ever, damage engraving or lettering.

Good gunsmiths stay off of the lettering and engraving during refinishing by hand and usually never have a need to recut lettering or engraving, only if the customer wants changes or the engraving arrives in a damaged or rusted condition.

Best Regards,

Doug

What a beautiful set of barrels- hope it's not a month before I get to fondle them.

Take my advice and fondle them wearing soft cloth gloves.

I told Doug I'm probably going to be reluctant to put them on the gun and use them.

Exactly what I told him about the three guns he worked on for me.

Wow! I doubt if those barrels looked that good when the gun left the factory. Very beautiful job as usual Doug!

They never left the factory finished. They were in the white, never proofed or fitted to a gun.

Not willing to alter the very tightly choked original barrels (as they patterned very well with my 3/4 oz reloads), I started looking for a donor Ideal for a second set of barrels- a daunting task, being 16 ga. Instead, almost three years ago, I found a seller in France with a set of NOS barrels in the white for my Model 314. I watched him relist the item on the auction site every ten days for about 6 months, and then made him an offer, with assurances I could walk him through the export/customs process and would pay all the fees.

So they are near the end of a long and very expensive (spending more than the gun itself four years ago) journey from St. Etienne: engraved by an up and coming artist in Eastern Nebraska, fitted to the gun and chokes opened by Kirk Merrington, and now polished and blacked by one of the best anywhere.

I only await Fedex's resolution of hundreds or perhaps thousands of miles of screw-ups and unnecessary travel to see and enjoy them: supposed to have them Thursday. What's a few more days anyway.

Mike

Doug has done several barrels for me...a 16 gauge Fox Utica Sterlingworth and a high grade 12 gauge Manufrance Ideal. I have had barrel blackening work done previously by another highly regarded craftsman who occasionally frequents this site. Doug's work is spectacular and I would put it against anyone.

I now have a line up of barrels for Doug to do. His time and my money are the only factors limiting the speed with which I have him do about 5 more sets of barrels.

Mike, I am confident this is going to be an "Ideal" week for you!
