"I decided that they were just tired of my business, and went to another store. Got the same rigmarole. I finally went to a pawnshop and the owner was thrilled to hand me a signed and dated copy of his FFL to send the seller. I asked whether he was inspected by the same ATF agents as the other two stores I had visited, and he said yes of course and that the other guys didn't know what they were talking about."

This is my understanding that anyone can send a firearm to a licensed FFL or C&R to the address that is stated on the license.
If that seller sends the gun to you at your address he is liable.

The reason some do not want to deal with a C&R licensee is because it takes them time to look up that C&R license whereas the FFL one is registered and they can look it up.

No: You just gave him a copy. I've had my C&R for almost 20 years and that's always been the case.

"Its all a pain these days...CR lic and you have to keep records and bend over for inspection"

I have had my license for almost 20 years and never been inspected. Furthermore I don't know of any C&R licensee that's ever been inspected.

Additionally here in Arizona: I can walk into any establishment hand them a copy of my C&R license and if the firearm was made prior to 1965 pay my money and walk out with the gun.

Additionally when flying I always put a copy of my license in with the firearms I have along. I've NEVER had one problem with airport security. grin

I also discovered about a year ago that in a State like New York thaey will not let you even handle a firearm if you're out of state unless you have a license.

IMO: The only detractors to a C&R license are the usual leftist Libtards who are for "gun control" in any form and some of the 01 FFLs who see us as an incursion to their income.

Gun transactions are more painful than they used to be. I have thought of a C&R and decided against as my volume of transactions is small and I simply do not wish to submit to anyone's inspection. I have lived and tolerated for too long to bother with anyone I do not have to.

I would also agree that if you only do a couple of transactions a year a license is probably not worth it.

Hi JDW,

Both Jim and I are correct,
you just send him a copy of the application/renewal,I have had one for over 10 years and never had an issue.
I drop it off as this is a small town and we all know each other (both CLOE's I deal with are great guys BTW and don't bother me).
You send a copy to the CLOE,there is NO action required on his part,he just files it.

I would NEVER pay 30-40 for a transfer but that just me,its nice to be able to have the guns shipped direct without a dealer getting in the middle,no need for a 01 dealer if all you collect are 50yr old or older guns.
Go for it,you will be happy you did and be buying more then 1 or 2 a year I bet !

Fortunately my LGS charges $25 per transaction. Not having to potentially deal with BATF or a nutty LEO in anyway like Jon did is peace of mind.

Gil, they only charge $25 here too, but the deal about refusing to release a copy of their license was new to me. Luckily I found another dealer so there was no problem. I sure do not want to get on any more government lists than I've already made, but if the gundealers all get crazy (or greedy) I'd consider it...Geo

Some 01 FFLs will maintain that they don't have to send a copy of their license because anyone can look it up in the online file.
However; I want a copy of their license which I put along with mine in a clearly marked envelope with any firearm I'm sending.
I have had zero problems over the years by just following the rules.

As far as the rules go they don't for an 03,it does of course make it much easier to book the gun in or out(just name and FFL number).
There is a good read by the NSSF about how long you have to retain a copy of the FFL,surprisingly you don't have to retain them at all !

Like Jim,
I send mine along with the gun, most of the ones sent to me come through email and I do make a copy and keep it with my bound book.

BTW, a number of local 01 FFL's here do transfers for free (customers who buy from them) and 10-20 is the normal charge for those that do-I suspect because there are so many FFL's.

I can't think of a reason not to. I have had nothing but good experiences with mine. It pays for itself on the first transfer and keeping a bound book is not a chore. You used to be able to get dealer discounts at midway, brownells, etc with one but that has seemed to phase out.
