I have a choice of two guns to buy. One is an N.R. Davis and Sons. Very good to excellent condition. The other is a Stevens 311 in comparable condition. I can only buy one, and it will be a shooter. Price is are identical. Both are 20 bore. So which one do I buy?

I think I'd go with the nitro. If the Davis didn't have so much DROP, and you weren't after a "shooter", I'd snag that one. Oh, heck. Just buy the lightest one and be done with it.

I'm not sure but the Davis may be of cast steel frame construction as I seem to recall some connection to the Crescent Arms company. If that's the case, the construction may be pretty poor on the Davis. It seems like we had a knowledgeable member on these guns, maybe Walt or LB? The Stevens will be stout like artillery, the Nitro would be my choice above the others by far if all conditions of the guns were equal.

The late, great klunk was the authority on Crecents, RIP. While I disagree with the notion that a Crescent is always an inferior gun, I do agree that the Nitro would be tough to beat as the shooter in this lineup.

Of the three, the Stevens IS the club. I'm thinking the Nitro will be my choice.
