Rich's picture is the basket-weave I've seen. I believe tht was pressed in. Certainly not a type of checkering. The gun looks like a Remington pump rifle, maybe a 760. I like basket-weave on a belt or a holster but not on a shotgun.

You hit the nail on the head Jim. A grotesque example but it gets the point across. I have seen some nice examples of basket weave, but like fish scale it belongs on holsters or anywhere but gun stocks.

Yeah, you are right, that is basketweave. I was wrong. Man, this picture brought me back 40-45 years. And everyone is right that basketweave (now that I correctly remember it) was truly truly UGLY.

Do think the skip line / Scottish / French or whatever is not so bad as an alternative to traditional. Certainly beats composite stocks as an alternative to wood (unless of course I was in a military operation or did a lot of rain hunting)

Wow Dave, talk about bringing back memories. That reminds me of my Grandmothers old dining chairs with the wicker bottoms. Always wondered how they held my Aunt (300lbs) maybe that is where it belongs.

Thay's the basket weave I was talking about. It's ugly. Skipline checkering is attractive if done correctly but my efforts proved that a good checkerer is under paid.

I Have heard two names for this :-

1) Scottish Skip
2) The Browning FN Superposed CustomShop brochure refers to it as "Cancelled Chequering"

It is a skip-line
My first custom rifle I checkered with skip-line style.
It looked Ok, but I like better regular fine 28-32 lpi.
I think it looks more classy.

Thanks for the input guys. I find it unattractive when there is too big a difference in the LPI. It makes it a little too busy for me. I like some of the examples posted here tho.
