Seems like an awfully complicated device to fix a simple problem.

It seems to me that whomever had this done might have forgotten in the past to push the safety to safe position when it was in the rear position and wanted something safer.
It also looks like they modified the old two piece top tang to do this.

I read it as a safety lockout.
For 'target' shooting.

it looks like and addition rather than a modification.it looks like it blocks the the safety to keep it from the bypass setting

It makes it possible to reset the safety manually to safe without bypassing safe and going to the third no safe position. That way you could take out the auto safe return bar. Just a thought. Mark

The auto reset is only in the forward position not in the rear position. This was first introduced by the L.C. Smith Gun Company, Syracuse, N.Y. around 1887. It was put there for trap shooters who forgot to push the safety forward when calling for the bird and therefore lost the bird.
It is a scary thing to be walking around with a safety in the off position and not realizing it. With the bar horizontal it would let the shooter know this and flip it.

I have a couple of Smiths, a grade two and a specialty which had the three position safety. I hated it and could never figure out whether the gun was on safe or locked in battery. Numrich has the conversion kits which are pretty easy to install, so I changed out both guns to the two position safety (yes I kept the parts for the original safeties)...Geo
