Is there any distortion viewable on the inside of the bores? No, the bores look great with no distortion that I can see. There also is really no indication of bluing damage that you would expect if it has been reattached. I was just concerned about the lug as my other doubles are not attached this "crudely". But then again, as mentioned, this is a model 24. I have never looked at one before so I just thought something might be amiss. But apparently not.

What I am wondering is would the weld repair on the lug not have compromised safety? The barrels must have gotten fairly hot duting welding unless the barrels were set in ice or something. Also, how far into the barrels does the weld penetrate? It appears it's mainly on the surface. There is no indication of damage/heat penetration inside the bores. You can hear a piece of solder between the ribs but it might be a little piece of slag from when it was made. The barrels actually ring very clear and crisp. The weld is in a fairly critical area of the barrels so I'm wondering about safety. Both welds were laid in in a continuous pass, no back stepping or staggering, and both show strong undercutting- from the crowned appearance of the welds- were laid with 1/8" or 5/32' 7018 high iron deposition downhand rod- aka- "Rookie Rod"--I would not trust the barrels after this butchery any more than I trust Obama to tell us the truth about Obama-Care-- damn shame--

Once again, I believe this was done at the factory. After market would leave a terrible mess in the bore. If you run a bore gauge through it you'll probably find it hasn't been honed out.

I had a 24 for a brief period of time years ago, and the lug looked just like that one. I'm pretty sure that's a factory job.

Anyone else here have a Win 24? Mike I HAD one but sold it last year to my neighbor. It was the only gun I ever sold in my life. I just didn't like the damn thing but he LOVES it. Yes it had the same ugly weld.

I HAD one too, a 20ga in fact. When I saw that weld (yeah, mine had it also) I remember thinking they'ed just welded two of their cheapest single shots together. Awful gun!...Geo

The few I've seen were all welded like that. Here's a top and bottom pic of a set of M24 bbls that sold on GA and they show the same weld on the forend lug. http://www.gunsamerica.com/926433264/Winchester_Model_24_Barrels.htmGo to the second image and clickon it to enlarge...
