In his book Walt lists the number of High-Grade guns (Grade 4 through Sousa) produced per grade and the number of 28 and 410 gauge guns produced for all grades.

The info above came from a tabulation Ithaca sent out to folks inquiring about such things back in the 1960s. Walts's work with the records likely shows slightly adjusted numbers. I've always wondered about that tabulation as it lists three 5E 28-gauge NIDs and I'd seen and handled three different Grade 5E 28-gauge NIDs by the early 1990s, and have heard of another; when I've seen far fewer examples of guns that were supposed to have been produced in greater numbers.

There are at least 4 Grade 5 28ga. NID's. I owned one for awhile and learned about the others along the way. I had 4 of the 10 or so Grade 4 28 Ga. NID's and saw 2 others. There are certainly not al ot of them out there. No one was buying a lot of higher grade small bore guns during the depression years. One of my 4-E's was shipped in 43 and had been built 5 years previously. They are delightful, nicely proportioned, small gauge guns!

And one of those Grade 5 NID 28's, I believe, has been cracked through the wrist of the stock, as a certain southeastern US dealer sent it to me that way without disclosing it! I sent it back.
