Why would this case have an H&H label inside and a Chas. Hellis label on the exterior. Was the "Macmillan" on the Hellis label the owners name and he kept the gun at Hellis'? H&H case

The origional gun housed in the case was in all probability made by H&H.The Hellis label was most likely attached when the gun was sold as used. It was common practice in Britain to add the owners name on the exterior of gun cases. For example at the opening of the grouse season [1850-1950,s] hundreds of gun cases were often loaded as freight on passenger trains bound for Scotland, hence the need for easy identification when they arrived at their destination. This method of shipping guns for the "Glorious 12th;" is now prohibited by the UK;s gun control regulations. Guns were often left with gun makers between seasons for service and storeage. You might be lucky and have found a case that was once owned by the Rt;Hon; Harold Macmillan, former P.M of Great Britain and noted grouse hunter!

Thank you for that explanation Roy. The Hellis label does have an "H" opposite the "MACMILLAN", perhpas it was his. I also noticed that same label is stamped "BSA .22" at the bottom, any ideas about that?
Thanks, Rob
