In post #279435 it was stated that: "Wenisch begins advertising as H. Roedl's successor. My 1st guess was that Josef Wenisch was the son-in-law of H. Rdl but haven't found anything of the like." It also has picture of names on barrel.
I have a drilling with same names in gold as pictured. It is in very good condition showing only minor handling marks. Checkering still sharp. Question, would like more info on this drilling, including date of man. It has 172/28 on bottom of rifle barrel. Would this be the date (172 day of 1928). Also approx. value. It is 16x16/8x58Rmm Sauer. I have owned approx. 22 years and only shot one box of 16 (shot great) and never shot rifle even thou I do have other gun in 8x58Sauer that I do shoot. Rifle is only marked 8.1, but previous owner gave me ammo that he said was used. His cases were made from 303 brit. I make mine from 32-40 ( 1/8" short but easy for me to make).
Have pictures, but being new to this forum, don't know how to post. Thank You wknitro

Rifle Gauge Table

A brief table that is pretty helpful for pre-WWI German rifles shows the use of fractional 'gauge' numbers for barrel diameters. This was largest plug gauge diameter that would fit in the bore. The British proof law of 1868 had set up standard gauge sizes from .300" (172.28 gauge) to .450" (51.05 gauge) in .010" increments in the same sense that a shotgun bore is gauged, by the number of round lead balls of that diameter that make a pound. The Germans adopted this somewhat awkward system as well.

Gauge - inch
51.05 - .450
54.61 - .440
58.50 - .430
62.78 - .420
67.49 - .410
72.68 - .400
78.41 - .390
84.77 - .380
91.83 - .370
99.70 - .360
108.49 - .350 very common on 9,3mms
118.35 - .340 somewhat common on 9,3mms
129.43 - .330
141.95 - .320
156.14 - .310
172.28 - .300 very common on 8mms

These are most frequently seen with a / instead of the decimal point, as in 172/28 or 84/77

Sorry it didn't want to insert hyper-link. In preview it uploaded pic. No link needed. Is that OK? Have more and will try other ways of uploading.

wknitro,
sounds like you need to join German Gun Collectors Assn., you will find like minded people.BTW, they used a"," instead of a"." when writing numbers(or a / as skeetx said).I suggest orig.length (2.125")38-55 Starline cases for your 8x57R/360.They should lengthen a little when necking down, whereas 32-40 should shorten a little when fireforming.I'll bet it would make at least 0.003" difference.

Thank You for the extra post. I did see this latest info in post #279435. Tried to upload more pic's using jpgbox. It didn't want to upload them or if it did, I couldn't find them. May try photobucket tomorrow. Could I just email some to you? If you wanted to share or post that would be fine with me.
Also gun is buried in back of safe, but from what I have writen down, and looking at web site above, rifle is for steel jacket (German proof No. 19 last used 1912) and has 815 on rifle barrel. That could be the date Aug. 1915 according to No. 29 on web site. I thought it would be little newer then that. There are more marks on gun that are not on web site. One shot barrel has "nicht fur kugbl" When did they stop stamping that on choked barrels? Barrels are all Krupp Stahl. Thank You Again Wknitro

Yeah, without reservation, forward them on and I'll post them. I'm interested in the marks. Seems as if Josef Wenisch of Praha may have assumed the helm of the concern H. Roedl Praha/Praze(vormals) circa 1893 or when the new proof law was instituted. It is a blitz action drilling in 8mm made by the talented pool of mechanics in Suhl or Zella-Mehlis pre-1912 or 1911 respectively.

Photobucket has changed, and I can't say for the better or worse just yet.

Kind Regards,

Raimey
