Don't know much about BP shotguns,but when I was shooting Pyrodex in a 54 cal rifle,I found that it worked much better when compressed as tight as I could get it.Maybe compressing it will help in shotshells.

When I shoot pyrodex in my .50 cal. Thompson Renegade I use musket caps. Regular caps arent' hot enough.

I didn't use musket caps,but did use the "hot shot"nipple.Your point is well taken,maybe switching caps or nipples would help.

It worked wonders in my gun. Thompson made a special nipple for those musket caps and it takes a different nipple wrench. With regular #11 caps about half would not fire the pyrodex and I stood there with my gun shouldered waiting and wondering if it was going to go off or not.

I'm wondering if you were using the best size of fiber wad. It is often recommended to go down to an 11 gauge wad in a 12 gauge or 9 in a 10 gauge to get the best/tightest seal for the gasses to push. An undersized wad can let gasses escape and reduce pressure.

I think I missed an important point in that you are shooting a central-fire. I shot #4s today & lost 1.

Agree with Stallones, FF BP would work better than Pyrodex.
I use Hodgdon 777 in my ML rifle and it works better than any other BP substitute I have found
Has anyone tried 777 in a ML or a BP substitute load in a shotshell?.
The velocity in my Kahnke 50 cal muzzle loader as well as the accuracy is outstanding.

Which kind of 6 shot -lead, steel, TM bismuth? If you are using steel at 1100fps at muzzle you now know just how lousy steel is as a projectile.

We have been told the load consisted of 90 grains (3�+ Drams) of 2Fg Black with 1 1/8oz of #6 shot. What we have not been told is "What Type" of shot. Even @ 1100 fps MV #6 lead or its equivelent should kill a duck cleanly to at least 40 yds. If the shot is the much less dense steel then #6 is about the equivelent of #8 lead, or less. I am thinking the kind of shot is the answer here.

While I too prefer real black to Pyrodex it should ignite quite well with a regular shotshell primer. At one point when I was having a hard time finding the real stuff but could get the Pyrodex at Wal-Mart I tried some of it. It did fine in my .45 cal round ball long rifle using ordinary percussion caps. I know a lot of deer hunters around these parts use it in their In-lines with total success & lite it with 209 primers.

I caught some 777 on a good sale & bought a couple pounds to try in a breech loading shotgun but haven't done so yet.
