My buddy Loaded some pyrodex with 6 shot no cup. we could knock them down but you need a half greyhound half lab to retrieve the duck.... and I have a 9 year old golden that still has some go in her. They must have shot 4 shot in the black powder days. Either that or I need a 10 guage which might be an option. We knocked down four that just took off when they hit the water luckily some were near the dog at the time.

What kind of #6 shot where you using (they didn't use non-toxic in the "blackpowder days")? What was your powder charge? What kind of wad column did you use?

Not nearly enough info given for anyone to offer any advice.

What Flintfan said.

However, they did use bigger shot in the BP and especially ML days. An article on duck shooting from 1838 "The Sportsman" Brit magazine (the earliest I can remember reading) recommends #1 for late autimn birds!

My buddy was the one that loaded them I don't reload at all but I'll find out. He did say he did not use a shot cup and he said he has chronographed it at 1100 fps which I had no idea it could do that.

I too think they used 4s or 5s. I have had great success with #2s and my velocity also was near 1100 fps, which seems to be where one needs to be. I would check the pattern on #2s, #3s & #4s to see which one is best. What is the diameter of the tubes?

80 grains of 2F and 1 1/8 oz of #5 Bismuth works all day for me.

I think I'm in the 70 grain range with 1 1/16oz but when you are rapidly reloading, you can't get the exact target amount. I'm sure #5s would fit the bill but never know when a Lesser might slip upon you.

Pyrodex is a miserable way to shoot BP. Poor ignition, and low velocity adds up to poor performance. SOme of us that shoot a lot of BP gave it up long ago. GO to 2F and be happier.

Gunners in days of old in my fishing village---I was young then so knew their loads---used No. 4 almost exclusively for ducks and kept a few 2s or triple As in their pocket for geese. No. 6 was for sports chasing partridge (grouse). I consider No. 4 best all-round load but use TM 5s in the blind over coys.
