There are three general classifications of firearms in Canada, non-restricted, restricted and prohibited.

Most long arms that are not full auto qualify as non restricted.

Hand guns are either restricted or prohibited. If they are prohibited you may NOT bring them into the country.

If they are restricted then you must get an ATT (authorization to transport) from the office of the chief firearms officer in each province that you will be in. You must have the ATT before you get to the border. Messing with this will result in severe measure taken. Canadian authorities have little sense of humour about this sort of thing. Zero leniency.

Does this restriction apply to percussion handguns as well?

Here is a bit of info regarding replica firearms from the Canadian firearms act:

Possessing or Acquiring Replica Firearms
Individuals may keep any replicas that they owned on December 1, 1998. A licence is not required to possess a replica firearm, and it does not have to be registered. However, individuals cannot acquire, make or import a replica firearm. If a replica firearm is taken out of Canada, it cannot be brought back in. Businesses may possess, acquire or import replica firearms only if they have a valid Firearms Business Licence that allows them to possess prohibited devices for an approved purpose.

You Canadians have my sympathy! I just sold an original 1860 Colt revolver, which was built in 1861, to a collector in Colorado. Since this is considered an antique here; All I had to do was mail it to him as no paperwork (Not even a C&R license) is required. Even the USPS doesn't have a problem with this so I was able to send it 3 day Priority and avoid the overnight expense of UPS or Fed Ex.

So that clears up the question of replicas, what about a genuine antique handgun and I specifically mean a percussion muzzle loader. One made say in the 1850's or 1860's.

Now as cranky as the Canadians get over handguns, you'd think they'd want to be very specific about things in that regard. Anyhow, I tried, it's not a big deal so I'll drop it unless any of our Canaadian friends have a specific answer or can point me to a specific law regarding muzzle-loader black powder pistols, either antique or replicas.

Chuck, seemed like I did read it, found a lot of double talk and gobbeldygook, but nothing specific regarding antique (not replica) muzzle loading handguns. There was that discussion earlier about avaliable ammo etc and what constituted a gun versus an antique (similar to the crap we have on the lawbooks).

We are having teenagers taken down by swat teams because they are playing with airsoft guns that look similar to real guns. The airsoft "guns" get confiscated. We may have made a little progress fighting back but there is a long way to go.
