I have a problem with a gun I just got. One of the screws holding the buttplate on apparently snapped off. Any suggestions on how to remove the broken piece so a new screw can be installed?

Depends on where the screw snapped? Any idea what caused it to snap? I would remove the other unbroken screw, and see if there is enough play to remove the buttplate, then take a vise-grip and clamp it on the stem of the broken one and back it out.

Assuming it is a "wood screw" and it has snapped of with the bulk of it in the stock . Then My usual procedure is to use a 1/4" gouge[ or old fashioned hollow type brace bit ] and using it's a circular motion slowly and by hand "screw " it down around the broken screw . This coreing effect will take the old screw shank out quite cleanly and easily . Then plug the hole with a good tight fitting dowel and re drill .You may be able to find a coring drill/cutter , that will suffice from a wood workers supply shop that is of a small enough diameter .

In one of my woodworking catalogs, there are special bits in there for removing such screws. It is like a hole saw in that it is hollow in the center and you place it right over the broken screw and drill out the surrounding wood. It is sized so the different ones they have are the same size as a dowel to fit in the drilled hole.
