First, my apologies for asking the same question I asked a couple years ago, but I've forgotten the answer, I tried to find it in a search but couldn't, and did I say I've forgotten the answer?

OK. My Lang BP double is an 18 bore, yet the barrels are stamped 23. I believe it was one of our British brothers who gave the definitive reason why this was done.

I promise to file the answer this time and write it down and file it in at least 3 places so I won't have to ever ask this question again.

Thank You all for indulging me.

No. I "read" through that one fast, vaguely remebered it, lots of discussion about jug choking, and choked muzzleloaders in general.

This is not a situation where you have a 12 bore shotgun and it's marked as a 13 or 11 due to the barrels, when proofed, measured as such.

This gun is a true 18 bore, but there is a particular reason why they're stamped 23, and doggone it, it's on the tip of my tongue or rather, brain.

An 18ga would measure .637" & a 23ga .587". In the early days prior to general acceptance I believe that shotgun lly measure from the muzzle rather than the breech. "IF" it was so measured & just missed 22ga & measured @ .595" giving it .042" of choke, it would have been so marked, this is probably not the answer though.

For whatever reason, it hit me when I was reading 2-piper's reply. Man, my aging brain forgets so much, especially to mention important details.

This is an 18 bore double RIFLE. I realize some of you may want to knock my teeth down my throat for not mentioning this VERY important detail. I apologize profusely.

The firearm is a Joseph Lang 18 bore percussion double rifle, serial # 355, which the records people at AG & L tell me it is circa 1835.
