First off, I have no idea how to differentiate between the two models, but this is what I have....

Remington SxS boxlock
straight grip stock
moderate engraving on each side with game scenes
vent rib with a red front sight
steel barrels
SN: 3XXXXX
4652

What is it? What grade is it? Is it original? Is it rare? Is it common? Thanks.

If it has a 'pull-off' fore-end it is a 1900; if it has a 'Deely latch' on the fore-end it is an 1894...Geo

Rem 1894's have a six digit serial number starting with 1 and 1900's are six digits starting with 3.

Of course, as George mentions, there is the fore-end latch type difference as well.

Mine starts with a 3 donor must be a 1900 then. I was told on another forum that 1900s weren't engraved. Why is mine?

If it's a 1900 then most likely someone had it engraved. Post a pic of the gun.

Model 1900's weren't offered/shipped with a vent rib barrels either; what you have is an after-market "upgrade". Without pics there's no way we can judge the quality of the non-factory work, nor how much work was done.

Id love to. But I don't have them on hand. Im not where the safe is and the gun is in the safe. When i get to it again I have to get pics of this and of the model 32 that I posted about. When I'm there what specific things would you like pics of besides the usual? Anything specific

Researcher will probably chime in on this. Remingtons seem to be up his alley and he has helped me a lot with mine. Not to distract from this thread but does anyone out there happen to have an extra fore end "j" hook for my Model 1900 Remington?

My 1894 CEO SN starts with a P, i believe the 1900's start with a Q. I also have the red front sight on mine but i believe researcher told me that it wa not an available on 1905 guns from the factory, but they may have been using them on the 1900's, Researcher said it is called a Bradley front sight.

maybe post here, you may get your answers:
Remington Society of America

here are pics of mine:

I looked at the ink Woolly posted. Researcher posted a pic of the Remington Hammerless. On the bottom the pic shows a Remington Special with engraving and a straight stock. What is that gun? Could mine be that gun perhaps?

Yes, yes, yes, I know you want pictures. I"M TRYING. I have things that have to be done that come first on my list. The gun is still in the safe. I have to work before I can play...unfortunately.

About 30 years ago I saw a similar shotgun at London Guns in Santa Monica, CA. It was almost certainly a modern upgrade by someone such as Pachmayr. I was told that it was a "Remington Special" by the proprietor. There is a small possibility that it came out of the Remington Custom Shop using left over parts. At that time I had never seen a Remington Special but I have since handled two of them at the Butterfield Auction House in San Francisco.

Do they have a certain serial number to be a Remington Special? such as the 1 and 3 for 1894 and 1900? How would one identify a Remington Special?

Yes they do; numbers start at 400,000. Probably 10 or less were produced; and none I've seen photos of have a vent rib (never seen the actual article).

The Pigeon guns in CEO-, DEO-, and EEO-Grade and the FE-Grade Trap Gun were catalogued as straight grip guns. However, any grade from A to EEO could be ordered with a straight grip at one time or another. I don't know of any grip options for the various K-grade guns (aka Model 1900).

These K-grade guns were made from 102 to 112 years ago, so many things could have been done to one since then. Until we see some pictures of the gun in question this is all an exercise in futility. I'll never say never, but I'm 99.9 % sure no Remington Hammerless Double Barrel Shotgun ever left Ilion with a vent rib, and no K-/KE-/KD-/KED-grade ever left Ilion with engraving.
