Sorry Gents for being off topic with a single barrel auto but would a first year mfg. 1958 Browning A5 20 ga. have come with the brake and beveled rings, normally seen on an A5? I recently inherited one with no brake or rings on the tube at all. I also notice a raised bump on the exterior back vertical flat in the metal that appears to be where the bolt is slamming into the back of the receiver. What say you A5 EXPERTS? Thanks in Advance Jerry

Alvin seems to have come back from the dead (stockers) long enough to understand that DOUBLEGUNshop.com is the perfect place to get Xpert advice on Browning autos!
Let the pundits roar... even Ted. (heard Browning had these suckers made by Ug-gar-retcha!)

Your inherited Auto 5 had been fired too many times without the split ring "braking system" in place thus relying on the action spring alone to control recoil and return the slide and bolt back into battery. The action spring is located in the action tube attached to the rear of the receiver and extending several inches into the butt stock. For the action spring, it is just too much to absorb and stop the rearward motion of the slide and bolt assembly on firing, so ultimately it would slam into the rear of the receiver. In design the slide should never make contact with the back of the hump. A slide link (long pin like attachment) is attached to the back of the slide and upon firing, the slide ling enters into the action tube and compresses the action spring and returns the slide and bolt back into battery. But you must have the friction rings in place to do the job of slowing the bulk of the recoil motion from firing. You can understand the workings of the Auto-5 better if you load this manual: http://media.browning.com/pdf/om/11-bfa-382-a5-om.pdfHave the shotgun inspected for cracks in the "hump" area. If there are no cracks, the shotgun should be safe to fire after you install the solid steel ring and split "braking" ring on the magazine tube. Rapidfire

Gotta agree with ol Ted Schefelbein this time! Electrical tape an' beechwood stocks sure do knock 'em dead! Why spend yer money on some over-rated import? In fact, why even have two barrel? One seems to duz it!
Y'all just drop those subscriptions to DGJ an buy Swamp People guns! A bigger man wouldn't still be taking it in his dirt 'chute in minimum.... come to think of it, a smaller man, either. Whatsa' matter, www.stinkypoo.com off line? You been here a lot lately, D bag. I gotta' believe your usual gay porn and "shake and bake" meth cooking sites are down again, ain't they Robert? Seems such a shame that a guy like you would waste his time here, what with your expertise in beastiality and necrophillia. But enough about you. I think my A5 was made in Belgium. I'm pretty sure the rings and whatnot go on all of them, regardless of gauge, but, no expert, here. Someone here will know. Best, Ted

In my youth, I used to hunt with one of those quail killing machines. Yeah, it's supposed to have rings. It will function without them but will kick like a mule and will bust the wood and can damage the recoil mechanism. A lot of old timers took the rings out and threw them away to prevent jams with their quail killing machines. You should get some rings for yours. Believe it or not 30 weight motor oil works great on the magazine for lubricant.

Hmm, that Robert.
Possible, quite possible.
He was thrown out of here I believe after getting into that mix up about the Darne action.
And here all along we thought it was Ed.

I think Robert disappeared about the same time jOe was in exile. I'm leaning toward the theory that Robert and jOe are the same individual.
Best, Ted

I don't know Ted, by the way those two tore into each other over a simple comment, but I do agree that he may be Robert.
