A 12 gauge vintage damascus SxS bearing London proof marks has the stamping of 13 on the flats. So would this be a 12 gauge with the tubes at 13 bore for choking? Reason I am asking is because 13 bore is around .710. The fellow that has the gun says it has measurements of left bore of .725 and right bore of .729 ( no choke constriction). Are these not the measurements for a 12 bore. He also says there is a small area of shallow minor pitting about 2 inches in front of the left chamber. I am thinking that it has been honed out to remove pitting or am I off base with my reasoning. He says his Brownell's gauge gives a reading of both barrels with a wall thickness of .050" 9 inches ahead of the chambers. I asked the fellow for more information but for some reason he doesn't want to reply.

My WW Greener 12 ga. c.1892 has on the flats 13 also. From what I was told, it will accept a .710 plug to 9 inches from breech but not .719 to stay in proof. Unfortunately, mine is at .727, but minimum wall thickness is .025.

13 is a measurement taken 9" from the breech - nothing to do with choke.

13 bore is .710.

It is a nominal 12 bore.

It is out of proof at .719.

Victorian guns were often made with tight bores.

That is just the opposite of our American Parker Bros. guns which up to about 1893 or so had very large bores, often in the .750" to .757" range, likely for use with brass 12-gauge shells with 11 gauge wads. Then, not long after commercially loaded smokeless powder, paper shells, became readily available, circa 1893, the 12-gauge guns from the Brothers P. began appearing with bores in the .729" range.

The tightest bores I've measured in American 12-gauge guns are in those made by Ansley H. Fox in Baltimore in 1898 and 1899. The two guns which I have thoroughly measured were chambered for the 3 1/4 inch 12-gauge shells and had bores in the .708" to .712" range. That is pushing an aweful lot of wadding down an awefully tight bore!!

Guns, If the gun in question was made pre-1887 it would still be in proof although right on the edge re the right barrel. The 13 stamp pre 1887 covered a bore size of .710-.729 . After 1887 it was split into 13 = .710-.719 and 13/1 covering .719 - .729

Terry, maybe you saw the gun. It is the McCririck & Sons posted on gun nutz.

He describes it as left bore .725, choke .725 no restriction and the right bore as .729, choke .729 no restriction. I think there are a couple of other issues with the gun as well.

My Remington M 1894 12 ga Trap has .752 bores!
I understand that the reamers available were the problem.

The fellow finally replied to my questions. He says that it has been reamed out.

Discussion of wall thickness is not of interest unless the distance from the breech is specified.
