Hi. New to doubleguns. I have a 16 sxs with E Fougere A Luneville on the receiver. The proofs are St Etienne. To me it is a beautiful piece. The only caveat is that the action has pins and not screws. Any info on origin and value would be appreciated.

Welcome to the site. Fougere was in business from 1929 to 1931. Much later, 1952 a Fougere appeared who was a distributor.

A "guild gun" is one that was produced without a name or trademark.

Thanks Pete. I did not know the dates. The story with the gun is that it came home after the war.

If you post some pictures, I am sure some one will suggest a value.

The inscription you reference "E Fougere A Luneville" is almost certainly the original retailer and his town. Luneville is in eastern France, Lorraine region. A lot of French guild guns have this sort of marking. Consider it as though the local hardware store or sporting goods retailer went to the gunmakers, ordered some at a certain price point, and had their name on them, e.g., "Cabela's Scarborough Maine" or something like that.

The real meat of the identification is in the St. Etienne make, and maybe the stamps of the barrel joiners.

If it's a bringback that would be unsurprising - most of these guns seem to be bringbacks. There was a lot of fighting in the Luneville area - it was the area where Patton ran out of gas. If you want a good history, here's a place to start: http://www.history.army.mil/books/wwii/lorraine/lorraine-content.html

But, overall, these French guild guns are solid hunting pieces and one you'll almost surely enjoy shooting. I have one and like it a lot.
