OK, what's the general consensus, bottom line, last word on these double rifles? Are they as cheap as their prices? Passable workmanship?

How about the "Safari" models as opposed to the "basic"?

I've only got one cartridge double, an Alex Henry 450 3 1/4 BPE and I love it.

But I do get the hankering for a .470 NE now and again. Don't know if I should just sit tight and let it pass, shell out 5K+ for one of these, or keep looking for an old "name" double that's not TOO expensive (HA!)

If you get onre that wfasn't subject to the dremel tool regulation they are decent. If it doesn't shoot to regulation then Cabellas has a 30 day return policy.
IIRC the Safari are a little fancier lazer engraved and probably has ejectors.
Get a 450 NE and not the 470. You're already set up for loading it. The 470 doesn't do anything the 450 can't. They're pretty close to being twins. The 470 is sixteen thousandths bigger and tosses a 500 grn slug at the same speed as the 480 grn the 450 uses. I shoot 500's out of my 450's with no change in the regulation.

Thanks for the calibre tip, Mike. Makes sense. As far as the Sabattis go, I think I'm just going to forget tghey exist and just wait for the deal that will eventually come my way on a nice 450 NE. It's how I got my Alexander Henry .450 BPE, so I'll just do the same for its nitro brother!

Others have their own opinion and this is mine!
The 470 and the 450 are both stoppers and neither is much different than the other. The 500 is a step up from here though.

AKMike is right on the dremel tool regulation, but you can look in the muzzles and tell if they used that method to tweak the regulation. Simply reject those particular examples out of hand.

I've got one in .470 NE with ejectors. I'm sure the .450 can do everything the .470 can do, as John Taylor himself pointed out. But let's face it, there is just something a bit more magical and uniquely "Africa" about the .470 nitro express. I even like the way it sounds when saying the words. My gun is a sweetheart. It shoots exactly to point of aim at 50 yards with the affordable Hornaday ammo, even though that isn't what it was regulated with.
I only have two complaints about my 470...1)the top lever has an inset engraved animal figurine that I can't identify....it looks like a sick goat with its head on the ground. Other than that the engraving and wood is beautiful at any price.
2) It is too light for a .470 NE and the recoil, out of the box, is vicious. So I had the stock trimmed and added a better recoil pad, and had a 12 ounce mercury recoil reducer installed into the butt stock. Not only did it tame recoil but it also improved balance. Its now challenging but pleasurable to shoot, and as I said, it shoots where its aimed. I would rather have this Sabatti than a Merkel or one of those French doubles that cost twice as much. If there's a better deal on a quality and beautiful double rifle in a nitro express caliber, I'd sure like to see it, and I've done a lot of looking. It should be remembered that I'm describing the deluxe safari model, which appears to be of completely different construction than the basic model, which I have never fired.
