There's a nice guy from Columbus, GA named Jim Rutland who was a Lucky McDaniels protege and who now teaches the 'quick-kill' course at Fort Benning. I took a lesson from him a couple of weeks ago with those sightless Daisy Red Ryders.

We progressed from a stationery pie plate with many many repetitions, to the ping pog balls which all ended up out in the marsh in front of the Sea Island Shooting School at the Cloister, to thrown metal discs ranging from claybird size to several smaller sizes, then on to quarters, dimes, Tums, Aspirin tablets, and finally to tossed up BBs.

About the time I began hitting the thrown up BBs with a BB gun, I realized that what he was trying to teach me was to mount the gun the same way every time and trust my eyes; it didn't matter how little the target was, the center of the target was always in the same place! Also, you have to let your eyes figure out where your gun is shooting by repetition; good gun fit is nice but the human eye and the automatic coordination done by your brain enable you to shoot any gun well that you can get on your shoulder the same way every time. We all oughta stick to ONE GUN; sure, sure...Geo

I was at Ft. Polk late in 1969-71 as an AIT Company Commander. I went through Quick Kill in Ranger School, it was fun and easy to do once you got the hang of it. I'm not sure how well it translates to game shooting, as I can't hit much if it's flying.

When I started shooting shotguns again about 12yrs ago I learned to shoot gun down [ mount ]. They were SxS's and a friend also went to them. I was trying to shoot guns with modern stock diamensions and it wasn't working. The friend had aquired one with a lot of drop and said " hey, this is easy, I can't lift my head because it's already up". I now have around ten old Parkers and Remingtons all with 2" DAC and 3" DAH. I don't care how high my eye is above the comb, as long as it's parallel to the comb. I don't mount the gun to my cheek, but half way between the jaw and cheek. My head is up and gun pointing where I'm looking. I hear over and over " oh darn, I picked my head up ". I tell em I can fix that - let me bend your stock down. Paul
