Went on a quail hunt today with an old LC Smith hammer gun. 32 inch fluid steel barrels (reamed out to imp cyl/mod). What a blast walking up behind the dogs and hearing that big "click, click" as the hammers come back.

I thought for sure I would miss a few shots tugging at the triggers without cocking the hammers, but I didn't. It was a little bit of a hassle opening the gun and dropping the hammers if I didn't shoot or only shot once. I am glad I always opened the gun though as one time I held the right hammer and tripped the back trigger. With the gun open it was only an oops, not a bang.

This is from a few years ago. Definitely a lot of fun to shoot. This one is a 16 ga. L.C. Smith, hard to find.

Looked like a classic quail hoot! Quail are a hoot no matter how you hunt them. Quail is THE game bird IMO. I can never get enough.

I plan on taking my 10 gauge Elsie hammer gun turkey hunting this spring. I have a 16, 20 and a 28 gauge hammer gun I use for upland hunting. No quail where I am.

My 16 gauge Joseph Lang non-rebounding hammer gun completed March 6, 1866 and re-barreled in Damascus about 1872 by James Woodward. I'm taking it out for quail again this coming Saturday and when I do my part right it still does it's part.

In this world that's spinning ever faster and faster I find that turning back to a gentler and slower time to be a great sedative for my frayed nerves and psyche. I do love my hammer guns.....(Wild quail in the Texas Panhandle). Hammer guns suit me perfectly--they're old and so am I. Maybe that's one of the reasons I like pipes and bamboo fly rods too.
